LX570 ventilated seats in Land Cruiser

I would love to piggyback on what y'all figure out - this is one of the few features I miss on my 2008 (the other being radar cruise control).

I hadn't thought about switching out the entire seat for an LX model like TexAZ suggested, but that is an intriguing option. The original seat is just fine for daily driving, but when I had to take it on a 5 hour business trip, I found the seat to be really uncomfortable. Too bad feedback seems to be that the LX seats don't cool that well.

Even if I couldn’t find a solution for the ventilated part it would be worth it for increased comfort and perforated leather. Really wish the LC seat was a little more comfortable. Then again I do a crap ton of miles so the seat position/comfort/places to rest my arms are the first thing I look for

My 2015 LC seat coolers blow a little on higher settings. With the high heat and humidity in Austin, I wish they worked better.

I've read that there are filters for the seat coolers. I havent been able to find them in the Toyota parts diagrams. Anyone found them and replaced them? I'd like to give them a look and see if they are clogged or dirty. They seem to be a well-guarded secret.

09 LX and I am thinking about pulling the seats to look for obstructions. The fans work and the filters aren't dirty. I wonder if the fans in the later models are different. My wifes has a RX 450H and no swamp ass in her car.

I'd be interested to know about those filters as well.

The previous owners of my '13 were using it as a kid hauler. I pulled an embarrassing amount of fries, toys, hair, candy, and trash out from under the seats. I can feel a bit of air movement around the seat vent fan when it's on, but they don't cool very well. Almost like they're clogged.

Good news and bad about the filters. They are only $10 each, are easy to change. They are the round mesh covering the intake on the bottom almost middle of the seat "butt" cushion (as opposed to the back) Turns out the seat fan is like a mini version of the heater/ac blower. A squirrel cage type fan. The filter is easy to take off and check. Its held in by a bayonet mount. Like auto headlight/foglight mount, but maybe a dozen or more tabs. A simple twist and they come off. No pics or videos since its really tight under the seat. The video that someone posted a link to shows the mechanism well. Look for the circulator screen in the video. Thats the filter.

Bad news is that both of my filters were clean as new. See the pic I've attached. I'm ready to write it off as a poor design as to the amount of air it moves. I've posted a pic of an old and new filter so you can see for yourself.

The fact that the old one is so clean would make me wonder if there is actually any air flow occurring? Just a thought. Can you put your hand near it and feel the intake air being pulled in?

One thing to add - when we got our 200 LX (used) I noticed the passenger seat heater/cooler LED was not functionng. In talking with our incredibly knowledgeable service advisor (he really is the best AND a cruiser geek) he said the best way to test the fan (and what they do in the shop) is to take a tissue and peel off just a single ply. Place that on the seat and see if it moves...

Nope, not your hand, a single tissue ply. Kinda tells you how much air the fan actually moves.....

One of the first things I did when I started trying to figure out the ventilation system was put my hand over the intake. It was pulling. When I pulled the filter off, same thing. I also felt around in the squirrel cage and there was no dust ball etc.

Since you asked (kind of) a couple other thoughts...

1) If there was a bad obstruction in one of the ducts, it wouldn't be pulling much air in. It doesn't act like there's an obstruction, and both seats pull the same. The odds are low for both going bad to the same degree.

2) Theres one intake about 2.5 inches in diameter. The air then gets spread over an entire seats worth of perforated leather. Like one of those soaker garden hoses. At the faucet, the water comes out with some force. By the time it gets distributed to all the little holes, the water is just coming out in a soft stream. I think the seat is like that. Whatever force is getting sucked in ends up weak by the time it goes thru the leather. It gets weaker still when you think that air can be compressed and water cant. (Think water in a tsunami vs wind moving the same speed.

So, I think its just the design. It could use a more powerful fan. Wondering if anyone knows if the lexus fan, which seems to blow more air according to some accounts, could be swapped for the LC.

I've pretty much moved on to acceptance.

I tried it. The tissue moves. Kind of floats just off the surface of the seat. Doesn't blow like a leaf in the wind. I never said it doesn't blow ANY air, its just weak. As thin as some of my shorts are, I still don't feel it in normal use. Was your service adviser doing that to show folks that there was no problem? Did he say whether its supposed to blow like a leaf or just float across the surface?

My previous experience with perforated leather (V8 Explorer) in a hot humid environment was that persperation and lexol eventually end up contributing to mold or mildew in the perforations. So I'm glad to have some air flow in the LC. I also cover the seats when sweaty, which is about half the year in central tx. I've been using dri-seats covers btw. Easy to put on and take off.

What color is the interior? If it's black, it may never feel cool in the Austin heat.

TG it’s tan ! Since moving from Chicago to FL then TX I’ve avoided dark colors int or ext. white ext when possible to minimize effect of fading. The lc is salsa red but buying used you make compromises

How hard would it be to fit a new, stronger fan? I'd be afraid of it sounding like a beefed up computer fan, but it would be interesting to see what could be done at what cost/difficulty with the existing hardware

Did you have any luck?

I just picked up a '10 LX and this was one of my first complaints coming from a Ford F150 where the butt cooling was much more effective. I talked with the local dealer and they stressed they are 'ventilated' vs fully cooled- meaning that there needs to be cold air below the fans. They recommended pushing more cold air toward the feet/floor and that that would increase/improve the effect.

I tried that and have noticed a difference- however, it is now a different PITA to adjust the temps instead of just using 'auto'...in any case, give that a shot and see if it helps.

Additionally, regarding the filters, there appear to be two types that are both compatible. '88921-60010' as mentioned above and then '88921-50020' which I'm guessing the 60010 as mentioned above is the later version, as they are different styles. The 60010 appears to be more of a thin one-way mesh. Whereas the 50020 is a thicker more 'fibrous' filter. I ordered one of each and have been playing with them (jury is still out)

I haven't tried yet. I had just had someone move from our rental and have been working with services to get it ready for the next occupant.

I’ll give it a try and post some pics later.
