shim the clutch plates and the traction will go up, but will still slip before snapping a birfield.

You care to tell us how to do that? I have some OEM LSD units to try shimming.

Dave

between the spring in the center and the Mushroom install the shims, i used a 3/16 washer. i also sand blasted the clutch plates to get rid of the shiny metal, this gives much more grip to the friction plates.
super easy and it works.
cheers

that's what I'd do, LSD front ARB rear :grinpimp:

If you aren't a extreme crawler or off roader .. your best bet this config. Or cable lockers ..

Is your DD . ? if not, you can go with Detroit rear .. and LSD front ..

Mi 80 comes with factory rear LSD .. and is my DD I thought is a good add on value, but with the normal ( city ) on road use, it loose quality and performance .. so when you really need it .. don't help.

All factory Nissan LSD IMOP are better factory LSD ever seen, but the same issue, most if the owner don't know anything about LSD or diferentian .. and it function. Less the apropiate oil and care ..

just my .000002 cents.

Just to confirm

When the 74 was up on the hoist we grabbed one rear wheel and my friend tryed to move the other. The wheel that my friend tried to move, only moved a little before locking. Is that normal for a 74 LSD?

Thanks

For a factory LSD if you spin one wheel the other one will spin the same direction (you need parking brake off and out of gear). If you spin one wheel and the other ones spins in the opposite direction it is open.

The above sounds like a good option..

I put one of these in my BJ42 about 5 years ago, helped on the trails but driving on the roads it was a little squirly, what happens on the roads is as you apply power it locks so going around corners it may or may not lock, and eccelerating it may lock and when it locks you feel the shift from the rear. It certainly was ok to drive but I really did not like the way if felt. If that is all you can afford and you really need one then great but if you can offord ARB's or cable lockers they are a better option. I think you will be fine with the factory LSD (I think it is better than most of those other types anyway, short of the full blown on/off lockers).

Cheers,

Michael

Exactly what I think my LSD seems to be great off and on road it’s a good option and that’s why I want another up front. I was amazed how much traction my LSD gives in mud and on snow and ice. Yer I know lockers give more traction.. but not on snow and ice. SO why not 2 LSD's ???

Go for it. Sandblast and shim them as Wayne mentions, and give it a shot. I've a LSD in the front of my BJ42, with an open rear. With manual steering it is a tad harder to turn, but returned to center nicely:D

you will have to learn to drive on slippery surfaces all over again esp on slippery sidehills as both front steering tires will want to head down hill with gravity pulling. when yo have an open front then one tire is stability as the other turns...

Yes, unless you unlock one hub. No option with the rear though. A selectable locker that is locked in, LSD, lunchbox locker will all cause the ass end to slid out or down hill. I remember thinking my Isuzu Trooper sucked in the snow when I 1st got it, till I educated myself about LSD's and realized what was happening.

Open front and rear has it's advantages, which is one reason selectable lockers are so highly regarded...

gb

that would work for sure but the down side of unlocking one hub is a possiblitly of torque steer as all the power goes to only one wheel now.
no?
