LRA aux tank and slight gas smell

Data point for stock tank, no customizations to fuel system. I definitely starting having a boiling gas issue today. Admittedly, I had mindlessly used some lower quality gas earlier this week and probably still had about a 50% mix of that in the tank.

Edit: this is in Texas @ Hidden Falls Adventure Park

It didn't "pour" out of the fill area per se, just a few drops dripped down past the door. But I had started smelling gas pretty strongly right before so I checked as soon as I could. When I went next to the gas cap I could hear it hissing and see fumes escaping pretty rapidly.

90 degrees outside wasn't too extreme, but the boiling happened when I had just taken a few difficult (to me) obstacles and then idled for like 30 minutes in one spot without any breeze / airflow (waiting for others to take an obstacle). I'm convinced it's heat / airflow issue (maybe gas quality is secondary issue).

I made sure to turn off the vehicle anytime I was waiting for others, and the problem went away.

You can see the couple drips out the bottom of the door, and the fumes in this picture.

To me it is noteworthy that this isn’t at high altitude like many have experienced the issue before, and I certainly have.

Another data point. Thanks.

I don't discount the fact that many people have had issues, but my one data point is that I haven't had any issues in the time that I've had mine installed. No fumes, no codes, no leaks. I definitely haven't done any high altitude or high temperature driving, so those may be big factors. I am running the @TeCKis300 mod with larger vent line and K&N vent filter.

Are you burning Utah fuel?

No sir, but I hope to this summer and will report back. My son and I are hoping to get out west in July, hitting some of Moab is on our wish list.

LRA no longer offers anything for the bastard 06-07 100 series.

They're acknowledging a problem. Has anyone here been in contact with LRA? I hope they're taking care of their customers that are having issues by coming up with a solution.

I've got a buddy that has LRA issues with his on the LC, his 3rd Gen Tacoma and his wife's JLU. It seems like there are some general design problems with them across the board regardless of make and model.

Wow, he's 3 for 3. Do you happen to know if they are main tanks or aux?

LRA does not build or design the tanks. They are just nice enough to import them from Australia.

Same as you might go the Target or Walmart and buy a coffee machine, they don't make the coffee machine they just carry it.

Myself I'm really glad they import them.

Long Range America 🇺🇸

Same same as far as I'm concerned. I'd be glad too if they imported something I could use.

Last week I contacted LR America and asked why there is no longer anything offered for late 100's, and since they previously asked for a VIN if they could provide that serial number where the evap changes were made. Their response:

"Anything made after May of 2004 has the newer evap system in it. This system does not like our tank thus far and we have not yet sorted it. I suggest looking at the manufacturer date on the data plate."

While they do import the tanks from an independent company (Long Range Automotive, of Australia), Long Range America does modify the tanks for the US fitment.

I started smelling gas just before my evap canister starting throwing codes. Which makes you almost want to cry, as fixing that usually involves dropping the aux tank. After I replaced the canister, smell went away. I also had the hose routings cleaned up so less likely to kink later, and mounted the mushroom filter as high as I could.

Hopefully your not about to have an evap canister issue. I would have lived with it, but it was preventing me from engaging 4LO.

Scylth, any insight as to how the 4Lo and evap are related?
