The marks gears SCREW with your overall overdrive. Im NOT about to comprimise my OD when I had to FIGHT to get a bloody rig WITH an OD.

The Toybox allows you to keep reasonable ring and pinions while crawling way low.

4.56 x 4.85 x 2.40 x 4.70 = 249 to 1

I don't see the attraction for the Mark;s gears.
$$$/gear ratio just doesn't add up.

Swap a stock spilt case, 2.28:1 for a 3.05:1 for $1395 = mild change

or

keep the stock case and Add a ToyBox 2.28:1 or 4.7:1 for $1425/$1824
= extreme change

Why hasn't anybody mentioned the Orion case?

gears are cool
more is better :D

Jim is probably correct as usual. I was thinking that I could do the split case gears and the H55 install myself. The extra length of the Toybox looks like a 3 inch section of the body and the cross member would have to be cut out to make room. Unfortunately, that is beyond my limited skills. I saw the other post about a 1 inch body lift-that might get me the clearence, but it's close. I would still have to cut out the cross member (the round curved tube one) and have another welded in place further back. I don't want the truck down for extended lengths of time so I'll do it a project at a time, but the debut is slated for Rubithon 2007 with my usual co-pilot driving the FJ40.

The Orion might be the best option of all, but I'd like to see them wheeled a year or two before committting to that route.

We now carry the mark's low range gear sets. The ones in our picture are actually the Rock hoppers. We found the rock hoppers although strong, more noisy than the marks gears. You also needed like a 30 ton press to get that extra long input gear on. All I can say say is, the H55 w/ low range marks gears, are pretty incredible. There are lots of different options of tranny combo's with different gearing, but I would put this at the top of anyone's list. Thanks, Steve.

Rockhopper also stopped making cruiser gears. Do you think MAF's decision to stop carrying their gears made them quit or was it the other way around?

I'm surprised it takes that much force to install the long input gear. The factory and Marks gears just slide on. Any experience with the aftermarket stock ratio long input gears, Steve?

Marks gears: 1400

Toybox: 1400 + 2 new drive shafts + new crossmember+ reworked TC linkage

there are advantages to both sides

Orion comes in splitcase now? how hard is it to swap to an older tcase style on a 60?

would somebody please explain to my dumbass what exactly "splitcase" means and what its advantages are.

I have been trying to follow this post to learn, but the verbage is killing me... TIA

Up until '80 cruisers had a one piece transfercase. After that it was switched to a two piece case where one side attaches to the tranny from inside, and the other piece attaches to that. Just two completely different animals. Crawl under your 60 and you'll see what I mean. if you can crawl under someones pre-79 FJ40 and you'll see the difference.

A slpit case is a transfer case out of late model 40's and 60's. You can take it apart and split in half....You unbolt the back half and the front half statys bolted to the back of the tranny. If you have a factory maula or even a Haynes manual it should be clearer than my description...

Thanks guys that makes sense... I will look in the manual this weekend when I'm home...

Has anyone actually purchased some Marks gears directly, and had them shipped to the US? I am an AA dealer, and even at my cost the gears are $$$. I have sold several sets over the last couple years, all with great results... I want to put them in my 40 (no driveline room for a Toybox), but I don't want to shell out so much $$$...

If someone comes up with a cheaper source, let me know!

agree .. but, here, I have more mud .. mud bogging is my off road playground .. I don't need 200:1 Crawl ratio .. !

OH there's room for a toybox! Comeon!
I got one in my rig, 2f, h41, toybox, splitcase! It fit!

H55f :D

I could "mabey" make it squeeze, I was nearly tempted to buy Olly's, but I started measuring and I would have a short rear DS.

Then I would have to retube shafts, mod my floor pan (rhino-lined), skidplate etc...

Still wieghing the options... but until school is over, I won't be spending much cash ;)

Wow I have to check threads more often. Orion (to the best of my knowledge) does not have a split case version out yet. I cant wait until they do though.

I think the toybox is a great option for super low gearing, but may not work out for some poeple 60+:1 ratios are not needed for most trails out there. The marks gears a replacements for the factory gears not needing you to do any other modifications. The toybox does add a little bit more length which could be an issue for 40 series owners, but there are so many other variables, engine, tranny, etc. I am not saying that any of the choices are better than the other, but different cruisers are set up different ways.

I havent heard of Klune-v's in a while, its a pretty trick unit, but requires a lot of modifications to fit in, and like the toy box, has you double measuring your rear driveshaft.
We discontinued the rockhoppers before they stopped making them I guess (I didnt know they wernt available) I doubt they went under because of us.
Mark's gears, toybox, rockbox, klune, orion, etc. etc. blah, blah, just use whatever works best with your rig, you wont be dissapointed.

Another difference is the gear ratios, spilt case is 2.28:1 and (I think) the early T-case is around 2:1

In other words, spilt case is slightly lower and allegedly stronger. ;)

Like Erik said, COME AWN Kurt!

Quit :crybaby: and stretch that biotch!

:flipoff2:

Gears are great, wheel base ain't bad either. ;)

Damn, I'm going to miss continuing this conversation at CM2005. :frown:

And we're gonna miss the Tequila Jim! Leaving Friday be in Moab Monday..
Kurt.. Your right.. It'd be a darn short rear driveshaft! Right now I"m at 19" on the rear.. Something like 42" in the front if memory serves me correct.. My rear shaft isn't really a shaft.. It's a CV and a slipyolk..

That's the point .. for example, HJ-60 2H with 68 crawl ratio. moving 37" tires on mud .. perfect .. !

But HJ-60 2H with the same crawl ratio, moving 39.5" ( if the axles can do ) in heavy moab rocks .. poor .. !
