I have an 86 lj 70 with rear drum brakes. after driving for a while fast (such that it goes fast-:) the rear brakes (I think) click loudly when I roll back and forth after driving (car off). if I let the truck sit then it rolls fine in five minutes. I just did the rear drums and my mechanic said he turned the drums. new shoes, new brakes. what else could be causing this clicking sound from the wheel area. are there parts like the self adjust mechanism that could cause this. I hope it is not the rear axel but that would not come and go if it was broken or slipping in the differential.

thoughts

If it wasn't doing that before the mechanic did the brakes, I would be taking it straight back to him. If its the brakes, he may have assembled them in correctly. Hard to say without having a look.
Do you have a locker diff, they sometimes click when locking/unlocking

thanks. the brake job made it better (not as often) but it still seems to only happen after I drive faster 100 kph to 110 kph. this is the stock diff and it does not lock as far as I know as there is no switch. it seems the truck runs a while then the rear brakes seems to stick a bit or even more. if it sits it goes away. I can go out now 20 minutes later and no click. rolls back and forth fine with no noise.

The drum brakes may be adjusted to tight and when they get hot start dragging.. As said by Rosco take it back to the mechanic and get him/her to check.

I would have to agree it is heat related. Very carefully feel around the brake drum for heat after driving. This would be a sign something is dragging. Too much heat affects the braking capabilities of the brake linings. If the linings have fine cracks in them, it is also a sign of heat damage.

Hand brake cable stuck ON? Or maybe not releasing all the way? Tension there correct?
My old cable had water in it. Cold weather came and I had brakes essentially frozen because the cable tension would not let go.
