The 1HZ is the motor that used to be in Mike McT's truck. He eventually turbo'd it, then killed it. That motor was a workhorse for Mike. He's got a 1HD-T in it now, says it a beautiful motor and has more get up and go than a 1HZ-T.
GG

Fixed for me!

He turbo'd his 1HZ, which we called a 1HZ-T.
Now... back to my usual medication...

other "buy & sell" options?

I've been browsing buysell.com & craigslist (vancouver) on a regular basis, what other online & local stuff is around?

If there is a SCREAMING deal in Seattle or such I'd consider it, but would prefer to stay on this side of the 49th.

theres a beige HDJ81 lifted on MT's at the kia dealership on fraser hwy in surrey. it used to be across the street at applewood motors, but they sat on it for so long beside a maroon HDJ81...i guess they just auctioned/traded it off. from what i remember about it..i was told it had diff lockers on it. but of course many mistake the center diff lock for the fr/rr diff locks. it had a custom badge less grill on it as well as a custom metal box formed non winch bumper on it as well.

its on 'sale' for the usual asking price of 16,900. i bet they paid about 10G's or even less for it...

Drove by there on Sunday while looking for Silk Roads, forgot about that one though. None of my business what anyone paid for anything originally really, but that sounds about right when not including import/shipping fees etc.

1st test drive

Took one out for a drive today, auto with lockers and factory winch.

Couple little, perhaps not so little, things I noticed.

The center diff lock, hereforth forever known as CDL, light was on all the time (an orange light on the dash), pushing the switch didnt seem to do anything.
The front and rear diff lock switch, when activated, turned on red lights, which proceeded to flash. Now in my old tacoma, this meant they were not engaged. I backed up, forward a bit, tugged tcase lever back and forth, they still flashed.
It also took me a bit to get it into 4 wheel drive, hunting for a switch, then finally remembering these are full time 4wd. duh!

But damn these things are big! Feels like driving a school bus, at least compared to my little Echo anyways. I'll be needing some of them little flag poles off the front bumper I think.

Decent power, not neck snapping by any means. Brakes felt a little on the soft side, but stopped it just fine. Had some kind of lift, not sure what, stock street tires on it.

The engine hood had some faded/peeled paint on the center exterior area?

156k on the odo, pretty clean inside, faint odour of smoke though. Had all the factory tools/winch gear in the little burlap bags still. Receiver hitch, with electric brake control.

I'll still poke around I think, The seller was an older Russian 'fella, strictly selling them to make money. Aside from some fluid changes and inspection, nothing else done like bearings etc. Seemed pretty firm on his 16,900 asking price, so I think I'll keep shopping.

Smart. Keep on looking. I have a Russian (Siberian) friend who told me about the Russian JDM networks. His home city is afloat in JDMs which then are shipped throughout central Asia and elsewhere. Some are well known for selling crap to non-Russians. NOt saying this is the case but it does have some warning flags selling something that already has visible issues.

Did you check out this 81 at Brave Auto Japan: Canadian Customers. They have a reputation of only selling the best (not the cheapest) and of getting vehicles shipped out quick and properly.

Of course you could check out these offering too: Canadian Customers.

Jeff was this the Russian's rig? 1992 Toyota Land Cruiser Turbo Diesel 4.2L

Have you taken a look at Abbotsford Japan Auto yet? They only post up the vehicles they have prepped. I will see today if there are any 81s in their compound.

Post note: Make sure the headlights have been changed out to LHD model lights. Some importers have been known to only change them to go through OOP and then put the JDM lights (RHD ones) back in. They are not cheap to buy.
