Hello all!
I've been stalking the forums for a while now trying to soak up all the wisdom that I can, but I still need a bit of help.
I have an LJ71 and I'm working to improve it/make it as nice as it should be. I've run into an issue where it seems to refuse to move fuel below -10c and I get gray fuel smelling smoke when there is no load on the engine even in warm weather. My mileage seems fine and it pulls hills fine. I suspect the pump is the issue and I've sourced a used one. (haven't gotten around to installing it yet- parked for the winter) I guess what I'm looking for are technical specs on the pump like operating pressures and sensor charts. I am a Journeyman mechanic but have little experience with diesels so far. I also have a set of new injectors, but I'm not sure if I should put them in as they tested at 2500 psi (is that too high for these motors?) My goal isn't to push the engine power level, just to make it work right.

Thanks in advance for any advise!

@Toygeek , What year is your LJ? You shouldn't have smoke on flat ground in warm weather. Difficulty starting in freezing cold weather is normal.

My LJ is a 1991. It sort of sputters and puts out grey smoke until boost comes on then all the power is there. It also randomly has really bad throttle response and other times its quite snappy. I'm going to test the TPS to rule it out as well, but the fueling problem in the cold is what makes me suspect the pump.

Well, mine has a rough start in the winter with anything below freezing. And initially yes, it smokes upon start up when below freezing. Once she warms up, no more smoke. I'm pretty sure you can index your Injection Pump to perhaps lean it out. You may also want to eliminate the EGR System and replace the glow plugs prior to replacing the pump. Worth a shot.

Yeah I have a set of glow plugs to put in as well as the set of injectors.

I would hit the pause button on the injectors until you have re-clocked the injection pump and changed out the glow plugs and removed EGR.. I haven't seen anyone having problems with injectors on this forum with this engine. Maybe they have, I haven't seen any threads on that though.

OK, I'll have to do some searching for the pump adjustment. It's a bit annoying that there isn't any service info about the 2LTE.

That is just a picture so you could see how the pump can be adjusted. I actually centered mine, and it has been running great in the centered position, since it was rebuilt. No smoke ever, except on cold day startups for a few minutes. I think you will be amazed when you clean out & delete your EGR how much gunk is in there. My glow plugs were in a bad state as well when I got this engine. I'd start there.

Ok thank you for the advice. I'll hopefully have some time in the next couple weekends to get it into the shop to do some work on it.
