Trying to find some decent fuel covers for my 73 FJ40, the 2 parts that cover the fuel evap and intake behind the passenger seat.

Quick question: are they always pewter gray from the factory? Or did some earlier models have color specific covers? Asking because sometimes I see them for sale in random factory colors, but I’m guessing that’s a mistake.

I’d like to find some in nice shape, but ideally not resprayed. I’m after a used set that looks the part, nothing restored or fresh. But nothing rusted out or pitting, somewhere in the middle of the road.

I listed a set yesterday or the day before 🤷

Originally these were body color. Here is my 2/73.

It was disgusted on mud that the early 73 model, those made in 1972 actually had a different cover and those may have been painted pewter.
No pictures right now but I did buy the two covers and tank cover off an 74 in the early eighties. Everything was painted blue to match the tub. My 10/75 76 model and the covers are pewter.

the very early 73s had the little guy cover, mine is a 10/72.

Was it ever figured out for sure if these were body color or pewter?

You can see a hole with a fixed nut on my front fender well. That is for the jump seat lap belt. It has the size and fine thread used on seat belts. The second one is just over half back for just one person. Does your have these fixed nuts?

The pictures of these small covers I have seen has them pewter, that is my plan. Not much info on these. Yes, I have the 7/16-20 seatbelt fixed nuts as you describe. I guess only one person per side gets a seat belt.

Found an old photo of the 74 tank cover. If you look at the headlight opening in the chrome bezel you can see the blue gas fill cover . Cover didn't start until the 74 model so 73s with the later cover (1/73+?) would be body color.

Checked and the cover changed 2/73. Mime was in the later 2/73.production.

I’m talking evap…mine is June 73…so mine came with the larger 2 part cover, and it’s coated in the factory color. I always assumed that someone painted it along the way because they’re blue and not pewter…the PO also repainted the cover panel inside the rear hatch, but upon looking at both closely under some light, the evap covers appear to be a perfect match from the factory, and the hatch cover is clearly a different shade.

I’m thinking I might have the correct covers after all and the pewter is 74+…which makes sense because 73 is the ‘transitional’ year for 40 series.

Now that I think of it, I might not have a gas tank cover…I suppose I’m missing that? Was it stock on a June 73 model? I feel like there wouldn’t be space for it…

Are you talking tank cover or evap cover?

The 2/73 is the date the part number changed. So my would be after the evap cover. The tank cover started 9/73 74 model. Prior to that there wasn't any cover on the fuel tank just two straps. Because the tank started with the 74 model and I have the tank cover, fuel fill cover, evap tank cover and they are all painted blue would mean the 2/72+ 73 these covers were painted body color. I've had these covers over forty years and are original paint.

Also prior to evap cover change the earlier 73 did not have any fuel cover. Up to 9/72 the fuel fill had cover clamped to the fill neck.

My May of 75 40's evap cover is the body color. I had the inside of it scanned to color match the Freeborn Red. The smaller lower cover that bolts on to it is pewter.

I have a really nice silver powder coated evaporative cover. Got to get it out of storage. I also have the fuel tank filler hose cover that is, I believe painted. Will post photos later today. Mark

So just go settle this, my June 1973 build should have body colored evap and fuel filler covers (the 2 part) and NO gas tank shield?

This is what I’m hoping as this is how my rig is setup…
