Can anybody recommend a good Toyota mechanic in Houston TX area? My son just moved to Houston with his 2000 LX470 and is needing some repairs, from simple oil change to suspension repair. He lives west of downtown, on Dunvale Road.

Thank you in advance.

what kind of suspension repair is needed? AHC involved?

Why does he want to remove the AHC?
I'm not really sure, I think it's giving him some issues and the cost of fixing it may be more than removing it. But if the AHC is a simple inexpensive fix, then he'll fix it, and that's why he's looking for a good mechanic. He's new to the area and don't know too many people down there

He also needs a full alignment.

The AHC is worth keeping as long as rust isn't an issue. A lot of people rip it our because that's what they saw some "overlanders" do. Most people immediately regret that decision after they find out how rough their once smooth as glass lexus now rides. Especially when they don't have any extra weight. There is a post on this site called "The abc's of ahc. If he reads through that he'll be more informed than 90% of the mechanics out there. Once you're informed it's really not that hard to keep in spec.

Cool, thanks. So are you a mechanic in Houston or own a shop there?

No, but I've done a considerable amount of work on my own ahc. What I was getting at was that maybe your sone could read through the forum post and perhaps address any issues he might be having without needing a mechanic or ripping out a system that still functions perfectly fine.

If he's here at home we can definitely figure it out and DIY it, plus I have all the tools here. He's going to school in Houston and living in an apartment with no tools. I think it'll be easier to find a good mechanic that can help him out. But thanks,

I'm in NW houston (cypress area, probably about 30 min away) and have a ton of tools and a scanner that's able to interface with AHC for all the readings. I'd be happy to help out with baselining the AHC to see if it helps, but I'm about to head out of town until around the 15th. If it's anything urgent that's not a particularly useful offer, but I do have plenty of space to do an oil change.

Last alignment I had done, I had done at my buddy's shop, IDB Racing ... I'm planning to schedule my next alignment with them once I get done doing my headers, upper control arms, and lift stuff, but they don't specialize in Land Cruisers and there's a chance they'd turn it down. They do a lot more sport-driving oriented stuff (euro and JDM sport car stuff), but they did do a good job and have a pretty nice alignment setup due to the type of work they normally do.

Thank you so much for your generous offer. I will let my son know and we may PM you to schedule a meet up. Right now he's trying to fix a blown heater "T" pipe with needle nose pliers and his cell phone flashlight 🤞🏻hopefully he can get it running today. This happened yesterday and we started talking about his car needing some maintenance while he's attending school in Houston.

He also needs a full alignment.
Get a Firestone lifetime alignment plan! I am on it since 2007 and it is lovely to see a bill of $ 0.00 every time!

Unfortunately, tire places have a reputation of doing poor alignments, some can't even properly balance a tire. I try to go to places that specialize only in alignments.

working on machines gives me joy, and my boys are 15 and 16, and I hope that in the (way too near) future they're able to find a good community for resources like I was able to back when I was in school. part of that is being "part of the solution", "good neighbor", "paying it forward", etc. either way, when it works out to a fun weekend for me and getting to help someone out, it's a win-win. besides, any time I get to loan out tools it helps me justify to my wife why I have thousands of dollars in tools that I may only use once on my own projects 🤣

@pingwrx , FWIW, looks like it's probably closer to 40 min, but happy to help if it's not too far for him
