Wow dang. Didn't u just buy that truck.

Yah not long ago, I knew it had a little bit of bottom end noise and originally planned to put a set of rod bearings in it to get me by until I could get a used motor to rebuild completely and eventually change it out. I was hoping to do some other mods first. But unfortunately now I guess it is time to rebuild what I have.

I wonder if it is cost effective to buy another 80 pull it apart rebuild the engine, have it ready to install when you need it and rebuild the one you remove from the working 80 and sell it rebuilt?
Of course there are other parts you can sell as well.
Too much work?
Is it worth it?

I have a shop down in MA that has done a few engines for me if you want to use a known good shop for the rebuild.

Thanks, I may keep that in mind if it comes to that. My mechanic is pretty capable and very detail oriented so I am hoping it goes well. The local machine shop does real good work but if they dont have much history with the 1FZ then I might look into it.

I am looking for a comprehensive list of parts that I need to do a complete overhaul. I have seen a few lists on here but it really doesnt seem like all that many people are rebuilding their motors, or if they are they are not posting much about the process.

A "comprehensive" list of parts for a 1FZ long block rebuild is relative. You need to state a few things:

1. Do you want to stay with OEM parts?

2. Will you go aftermarket parts for certain components.

3. What else are you going to attack "while-you-are-in-there"?

4. What is your budget?

5. What are your intended uses once you have rebuilt the engine.

Good luck.

I would stay OEM with most everything other than the head gasket
I dont have much else to attack other than hoses, gaskets etc.. the rest of the PM is pretty much up to date.
Budget is relative, I am trying to get a list of what it will be to bore my block, turn the crank, service the head/valve train, so I will need pistons, bearings, etc. gasket set. I am basically trying to get a cost together to see if it is worth doing or if I should by a rebuilt longblock.
The intended use is my daily driver weekend warrior. The truck is currently sitting on FOR springs with 285's and I plan to add armor. I do not plan to supercharge or turbo.

Well a big thanks to all on this site, fellow mudder 4x4CPOSEADOG, and my mechanic I think I am finally on my way to getting the LX back up and going. All the support on here especially Beno and his very helpful parts list and 4x4CPOSEADOG for a deal on a low mileage short block. I am getting a shortblock with 67K original miles from 4x4CPOSEADOG, I am ordering all recommended gaskets, seals, hoses, timing components, and various other things from Beno and then putting my mechanic friend to work while I am overseas for the next month. If everything goes well, when I get home in April my LX should be ready to go again.

Haven't taken the pan off yet, but quite positive I spun a rod bearing and seized a connecting rod.

Would love to know if that actually happened. Very uncommon.

Well something seized enough to loosen the crankshaft bolt on the pulley (304 ft/lb) lots of copper bearing material in the pan. I will report back when the engine comes apart.

What is the vehicle history? Running synthetic oil?

The po was running syn and I just baselined all the fluids and filters with everything synthetic. Original owner was factory service so not syn as far as I know.

Miles?

191K. It had some minor knocking on start up since I got it but seemed to be pretty common so I planned to put it off for a bit. Bad idea I guess.

That's too bad. It will be like new when its done.

I like Ih8mud:flipoff2: Just happy to help another 80 series fellow mudder! My loss is your gain:hillbilly:

Glad to hear you're getting sorted. For anyone looking I saw a running one on craigslist yesterday. Here's the ad.

148K original miles, excellent compression. Removed from a 97. Complete as shown. Removed for a V8 conversion, now in our way. We are moving so time to clean up! Killer bargain for the right person! Add $100 if you want the automatic transmission too! It also was in fine order when removed. Thanks, Elvin. 818-785-2200 Have forklift, can assist with loading. Cash Only!

Well with everything being ordered I am just waiting on stuff to come in. I am looking into "what else" should I do while the engine is out. I am mainly looking for the must does and not really the nice to do unless they are inexpensive. I don't mind spending the money on things that I should really do. I am still debating on a new radiator but I am sure there are other items I am overlooking.
