Would love your help crew ! I am close to purchasing a very clean 2006 land cruiser - save one area of rust I can't figure out. Can anyone help me identify this rusted component - can it be replaced ? Frame is very clean otherwise. Can replace the oil pan guard easily obviously but I've never seen rust on that cover. Appreciate any input !

I'm less concerned about the front skid, more concerned about the front crossmember it's bolted to.

Do you have more chassis pics?

Weird rust spots in the front.

Probably not a northeast rig though…It would look way worse at that age. Strange none the less.

I’d keep looking. Take it from someone with a rusty rig.

I think I know. That is not road salt that is salt spray. That vehicle lived very close to the beach, front of vehicle probably faced west. Constantly being hit by the salty wind. The front metal shield looks to have been spray painted before. Frame does not apear to be rusted thru, plate below the fuel tank looks to good to be road salt from the rust belt, rear diff is not covered in surface rust. That explains the service records from California.

How is the body? Any rust on the rocker panels, fenders, rear tail gate?

I'm going to see it tomorrow

Body looks really good, interior clean. Tons of service records. I'm going to go kick the tires in person tomorrow

Go look at it, you got nothing to lose. Look at the evaporator, radiator, and surrounding areas. Hell look at everything real close, bottom of doors, tailgate, rear parking cables, exhaust, around front windshield, engine bay. Ask the owner where it lived most of its life.

If the rest of frame is clean (not paint coverup) easy enough to replace that cover. Believe me I'll be searching for rust coverup.

The crossmember is obviously involved repair - can it be replaced without significant pain ? (Assuming no other rust)

If the cross member is not rusted thru you can always wire brush it, apply rust converter or primer, and paint it. Price is also important.

Looks like they dipped the front end into salt water for some reason, and it just ate at the metal. The rest of the frame looks good, northeast vehicles would rot the entire thing out.

Anyone know the cost of replacing that cross member for OP if he were to buy this one? What else would be involved outside of part cost? I’m seeing like $250 for the part itself (P/N: 51201-60140)

I’m assuming worst case here in the event that it has to be replaced (I would replace it personally).

@98LXbeast Do you have close up pictures/video of where the cross member connects to the frame itself on both sides?

Edit: Another assumption that I’m making is that the cross member is welded to the frame and not bolted, but I really don’t know. I would go check mine outside but my wife took the LX out

you being in san diego, run don't hide.

If you was in mass, that would be a cherry rig.

that's not my story and I aint sticking to it ☮️
My thoughts exactly as a northeast dweller. No way I’d buy one with rust if I lived in Cali
