Anyone know of a local place to buy wheel bearings + seals for my 80? Gonna call Radd on Monday, see what they have. If I can just walk into Lordco or Napa or something and buy them on the spot that'd be great.

Also will need inner axle seals... hoping local? If not Jay suggested Marlin Crawlers (but would have to wait for shipping obviously)

Dan & Cam, Morgan has an extra birf (the newer type, hope it will fit) that has some moderate wear on it, I'm going to pick it up from him tonight. Hoping we can slam it in there :wrench::wrench::wrench: and will hopefully fit the splines (love that word) depending if my 93 has the newer type of birf.

I got the seal kit from Radd, everything except wheel bearings. My wheel bearings were fine........... They are quite expensive, might be worth checking your old ones before you buy new.

And yes, Lordco will most likely have the wheel bearings in stock. They had tie-rod ends and a pinion seal for me yesterday :)

I would say radd. Research your prices.
Get the marlin heavy duty inner seals though.
What about doing your bifs and drive plates too....
I would look into do the lifetime wipers from long fields.

Heck why your at it why don't you make your truck Part time:)

Question is are you rebuilding the front end. If so get a kit from radd and birfs and flanges, bearings are probably still good. I strongly suggest not using a used birf on one side. 80's need those replaced they are a wear item, other wise you are asking for trouble. Or like what was said changed it to part time cost more up front but will save you in the end. birfs dont wear out as fast also may get better mileage.

i just got 2 pairs of marlin inner axle seals the other day from North shore off road in Van... only took about a day for shipping...
i am pleased with the quality of them...

i know NSOR still has them in stock...

I would start with new toyota lock nuts and washer.

Andrew is going to need new bearings. When we took tham apart on the trail they were DRY. Dan and I were both suprised he hadn't had problems sooner.

The washer with the little tab was able to spin around and the C clip had seen better days. The lock washers were pitted as well.

I too think the best thing to do is replace everything and not have to worry about it again. But its not the cheapest way to go.

Part time sounds like a great ides. I'd do it too. Is it as simple as free wheel hubs and that "pin mod" to get the center locked in hi???

Radd has a kit that you put in the T/C and then you put hubs on the front. You can do it in steps by starting with the hubs up front but then you have to run with center lock on. There has been rumors that this mod can help mileage aswell, it for sure will do less wear on birfs.

Local source for wheel bearings and the knuckle rebuild kit/seals: Radd Cruisers! In stock, too. Picked them up on Monday.

Hmmmm, mine has 270,000km and I've never done them. Maybe when she cracks 300k I will go through the front end for something to do...

Probably be surprised what you find...

Jay, Andrew and I had this conversation already, and we discussed how this is purely a temporary fix until new birfs can be scheduled (apparently a new baby is expensive - who knew?!).

In the meantime, I am trying to arrange a small buy through a friend in Japan. MOT is unfortunately not in Japan at the moment, but my friend Andrea is, so she is seeing what she can do.

The last time I had to order an OEM 80 series birfield from Japan, it was about US$450 including the approximately $40 for shipping. Still expensive, but beats the hell out of over $900 from Toyota Canada, or the less expensive but wholly unsuitable for daily driving cromoly birfs from Longfield or Slee.

Looks like I will be able to attend the next meeting - maybe we can talk about at a birf (and other dealer OEM stuff) bulk buy from Japan. I need to get a new hub and spindle (again), so I don't mind doing the legwork for anyone who can pay up-front.

Aside: I will be ordering the part-time kit in January. Hopefully I can do this through Radd - I think it's available through ARB.

Hey guys, back with John at Radd and we do have them and will be competative with any price in Canada....

Rob

You bet! Already picked up a set from you guys :)

Just a note on Marlin seals:

The high pinion front ends after 1990 use a seal that is updated and larger than the ones that were made up to 1989. The Marlin seal is an attempt at providing the performance of the new design of seal while using the smaller available space of the earlier seal.

So, Marlin seals are not required (or available, afaik) for the newer front ends. The 1990 and later Toyota seals are far superior to the early ones but are too large to fit into the earlier space.
