Hi All,

My 86 LJ70 is popping out of 1st gear, which I assume means tearing into it. The syncros for going from 1st to second and second to third can be a bit grindy when cold as well. The truck has over 160k miles on it. Is this something I can do myself or have done in most garages or should I find a specialist and/or spring for a fully rebuilt unit from somewhere?

Thanks for any guidance y'all can provide.

Best,
Rich

Do you know which model gearbox it is?
I am told the H55f 5 speed is available new.

I'd try to find a transmission shop.

Hello,

Check your transmission model. Light Duty Cruisers had G40 and G52 transmissions.

Like the H55F, both models seem to slip out of gear in old age.

Quite likely your transmissions needs to be rebuilt.

You need to work out which one it is. But it sounds like a rebuild to me. If you have done a gearbox before and have a good set a of pullers it shouldn't be too hard.
Most gearboxes have a rebuild video on youtube. Good idea to watch one and see if its within your capabilities.
