It seems unlikely that it’s the injectors but maybe one actually s*** the bed and is leaking bad. How many miles do you have on your engine? Fuel could be going past the piston rings…weird. I’d start with the injectors myself. Just to be sure.
Yep, I’ll have them sent out. Engine is at 230k, but probably more like 245-250k accounting for uncorrected speedo.

Cross those fingers…

Godspeed Land Cruiser! May your rite of passage be successful!

Seals shouldn't be letting fuel into the oil, nor should a bad injector - That sounds like it's getting past the rings.
A stuck open injector will wash pass the rings with ease

I spoke with the folks at the shop again. They continue to be be adults oriented to customer service. They are going to do an injector inspection, and it seems like they can assess thier function to some degree and do a back flow cleaning of them. We also talked about the possibility of worn rings as well. The lead on my cruiser seems detail focused. At this point I will have to wait and see what they discover and then go from there.

I’m going to be surprised if it’s the injectors. I had them cleaned at R.C. Injectors 12/21, and they all seemed to “pass” after their tests. That being said, after researching symptoms of open fuel injectors, I have noticed some slight stumble at idle. So I’m not sure.

I agree.

Minor Update

I heard from the shop that the head is off and has been at the machinist. The head is in good shape and dosn't have any warping. There is some pitting to address. The machinist also recommended a valve job as the exhaust valves seem to be leaking. It adds a bit more cost to have it all squared away, but I want the best possible end product. I'm also out of town for a bit, so I wont have my hands on the cruiser until the end of July. I'm getting used to my modern cars...I probably wont remember how to operate a keyed ignition by the time i get it back...

Update

Shop called this morning, with news that the rig is finished. It’s been out for 40 or so miles for testing, and now has fresh oil for my break in. I am out vacationing in Washington, and will pick it up next week.

The shop is pleased with how it’s running. I have had several more really positive conversations with them, so I’m eager to see how well their assessment matches mine. I also had them evacuate A/C system so I can pull my compressor which seems to have a seized clutch. More updates next week!

That seemed quick! Bet you're excited to have your cruiser back!

If you wouldnt posting a dollar value to this project, it would be helpful to others for comparison purpose.

Glad to hear it's back together!

I'm a little curious if the EGR was working when it failed. Sounds like you removed PAIR, but still have EGR?

We have a '93 with similar miles and that looming worry about the head gasket comes up now and then.

I will happily post up all the details, but I haven’t gotten the final invoice yet….

Should be exciting.

EGR was disabled, but I think the first 220k it functioned. I disabled the EGR by looping the EGR vacuum line back onto itself when I did all the vacuum lines a couple of years ago.

I just rolled the dice. And decided adventure in far flung places was worth the risk. I’d do it all over again!

It’s still at the shop and I’m 1700 miles away on vacation….soon though. Very soon.

Now you have me a little more worried because I did the same thing around a similar mileage! I was kind of hoping I had a free pass...

I appreciate the info. It's a rough situation, but hopefully things are all better in the end. Seems like a really good motor other than the headgasket failures. But these rigs wouldn't be as endearing if nothing ever went wrong.

So one big error I see in my process, was that I replaced nearly every component in the cooling system, but not the fan clutch. I think at the time I convinced myself I was going to service the thing and replace the fluid, but I never did.

i won’t tell you not to worry, but plan for the worst on a big trip so it’s not an emergency if your HG goes and drive it.

I have my cruiser back from the shop and in my driveway waiting for me to pickup where I left of with finishing up my various projects. I was pleased to drive the LC home from the shop. The idle seems much smoother than the past few months and i am really excited that it has a fresh valve job to boot. As requested, here is the cost for those fearing this process.

Total cost was $4,472.06. Here is the break down:
  • Labor for R&R of Cylinder HG $2,475.00
  • Parts: Engine Cylinder Gasket set $411.91
  • Sublet (machine Shop) Valve job and head resurfacing $1,350.00
  • Lube and Oil change: $105.58
  • Shop Supplies $75.00
  • Taxes: $54.67
So that the breakdown of my HG job. Really hopeful I can no go another 250K without HG issues. I have no reason to believe otherwise.
