LCXC 2018: Baja!

I’m hoping the 2018 in the title means this is an annual trip. This is something I’d want to tag along for once my LC is ready.

As an aside, Is it limited to LC’s? I have a group of friends with Tundras that would probably be interested too. Any kids in the group? I mean actual children, not millennials.

This is a first...so who knows? :)
TonyP got this one going. I don’t think there are kids, but the LCDC certainly had had quite a few.

I’m happy about the Baja trip because it’s the first time I don’t have to drive 1000+ mikes before we start. :)

I hear ya. With a 1 year old, I have to try to hit dirt as soon as possible. Can’t spend a full day on pavement each way right now. Which is why I spend most of my time in Anza and Mojave.

But it starts getting repetitive.

Tentative rough route. Mind the tangents the paths go on, I took some tracks from other gaia users. I'm sure it'll change en route and/or be shortened (possibly cut over from the pink route to the purple) but we'll play it by ear.

My goal is to one day take the family and kids to Baja but even if I had invited them they would not have been interested due to the unknown and perceived dangers.

That said, I'm in SD, often go out with the family so if you want to hit some dirt for a weekend let me know.

That looks like an awful lot of ground to cover in a week? What does the mileage work out to total and per day?

Most days are 2-3 hours of driving, a couple are longer, couple days are shorter. Like I said, it'll probably change 34 times while we're down there.

Furthermore, I woke up to 6 inches of snow on my crapwagon BMW which was fun to clean off before leaving for work where the roads were littered with horrendous drivers. Therefore, I need Baja immediately.

For next year? Sure.

As long as the group doesn't get too big. This year will be a test for how many rigs we can handle, logistics, planning, ect... I think, as mentioned before, keeping the vehicle number lower rather than bigger is better. We'll see how this trip turns out though.

But, I'm not the offical organizer (as there isn't one). I'm just the perpetrator/instigator.

Decentralized like bitcoin. I like it. I hear ya on group size. We usually limit trips to 6 trucks on runs too. Works well for meal planning and not having a mile long caravan that takes two hours to spot for every time we hit a technical section.

There's also the little things like fuel stops, food, bathroom stops, photo ops. They all add up.
Especially with (most) women :D

I just received ~$400 worth of pesos from BoA. I should probably grab some more in case there are ATM issues along the way. This is actually something I've done zero research on yet... do gas stations tend to take credit cards?

take some walking cash in your wallet/front pocket. keep the bulk of your fortune stashed away.
Pemex takes cards, most stores close to the freeways are modern and just like in the states, at least like southern san diego...
save your pesos for small town/village/locals only type places.
load up on swag....stickers, hats, candy, adult beverages, will buy a lot of good will in the more out of the way places.

on your way back stateside, don't bring any food items across the border. we had to dump a cooler one year after a race. it was a newbie border agent, hassled us for 2 hrs because of a pack of sandwich meat.

when crossing through Tijuana, try to stay together as a group. get through TJ, no stops, cruise down past rosarito, closer to Ensenada for any breaks.

remember, traffic signs in TJ are vague suggestions. just keep your head on a swivel and drive defensively.
