LC 250 Wait list? (1 Viewer)

I'm first in line with a 1k deposit and no markup at one of my locals. The no markup benefit is because I know the GM of the auto group, otherwise they will be doing a market adjustment.

Talked to the new car sales manager at my local dealer. Said they do not think they will receive a FE, and if they do the owner has his name on the first one. I went ahead and got on their list. I called another larger volume dealer close by, put a $1k refundable deposit down, and they put me down for FE or LC trim. Both are MSRP dealers. Curious how allocations will go coming up in 2024.

Side note I called quite a few other high volume dealers in my state, wow did knowledge and answers vary about their wait list policies and procedures.

I got my name down with the 2 dealers I get all of our fleet vehicles from. No word about availabilty of a FE, but I also have my name down for a GX overtrail. At this point it's just wait and see on pricing and what becomes available. I really like the GX, but depending on the price difference I could be just as content with a LC250.

I called several dealers on Wednesday morning to "get on the list". Responses varied from:
  • The person was not even aware of the announcement but was faking their way along,
  • They added me to an informal list to get more info later,
  • They added me to a more serious queue, but no deposit. Said it would be an MSRP deal and to just not throw a fit with what's available when it comes up. I was third to call.
  • They would put me in a queue with a deposit but said there would be a mandatory market adjustment. I won't accept market adjustments on principle.
  • They wanted a $2,500 non refundable deposit (this is actually the same person as #1 when they called be back later). They said it would be MSRP + mandatory window tint + undercoating. Sounds like a great way to waste $2,500 with 1000 different ways things could go wrong in the next year while we wait...

I just talked to a few dealers in the area and had basically the same experience...

Our local dealer was the only one who seemed to know anything about Land Cruisers and would put me on a list for a $1K refundable deposit. They also have a 5-7.5K "market adjustment" fee which I am not at all into.

All the other dealers I talked to said it was way to early for any kind of list and that they had no idea what they would be allocated.

One also said that "toyota does not allow for any kind of custom ordering" and that the dealer only gets what Toyota wants to send him... I asked him if that was true, how could I possibly put my name down for a First Edition, or what If I wanted a specific color??

Is that accurate? I've never bought a new toyota. How does the ordering process work? I would expect to be able to specify what trim level, color, and packages I would want...

As far as I know, Toyota doesn't offer custom ordering. You tell your dealer rep what spec you want and they'll notify you when they have an allocation that meets or is close to your spec. It's not ideal but I assume it's a profit driven decision for Toyota.

When I bought my Toyota new, I told the dealer what I wanted and they went to another dealer that had that car and got it from them for me. We only deal with one dealer for buying cars so it was either that or I’m not buying one.

Wow, interesting.. so for LCs, which I assume most dealers don't sell many of at all, I'm guessing it can be hard to get what you want?

And then my question still stands.. not that I want one, but how would you even get a first edition?

Just spoke to one dealer who said they have closed their First Edition wait list since they had plenty of people.

Toyota doesn't do custom orders, but like it's been said, you just wait for an allocation that is acceptable to you (color and trim level in this case, and whatever options Toyota might announce later).

Have a lot of money and/or own a Toyota dealership….

Or a Land Cruiser museum.

That’s how this is going to go down for the First Editions.

Yeah the allocations are funny. I remember when I bought a new Tacoma the people over at Tacomaworld would get so pissed at people who called it "ordering" not "allocating." I've bought 2 new Toyotas recently, a 2020 Tacoma and a 2021 Land Cruiser.

For the Tacoma, I was looking for a less common model. Wouldn't call it rare. A 6 speed TRD Offroad in white. But even that, it took 6 months for the dealer to get the allocation, but I was able to just buy it locally like that. Some guys had to do a lot of nationwide searching to find rare models like 6 speed TRD Pros in certain colors without insane markups, or access cabs.

For the Land Cruiser, my wife only wanted a black HE with a third row so that took a lot of calling around. Black was a more common color but it was right around the time they announced the discontinuation of the LC in the US so prices were all over. Local dealers had a couple that would work but they had huge market adjustments. After a lot of research and calling all over the country I found one in Boise that was very close to MSRP - a pleasant surprise when people were charging 10-20K over MSRP elsewhere. I put a deposit down and flew up there and drove it home.

Anyway not sure how that will translate to the 250 since both the taco and the 200 were closer to the end of their model life cycle, not launch editions. But there's a chance you could find some random dealer in a backwoods part of the country that can help you out.

I am going to my local dealer Venice, FL tomorrow to talk to them in person. I don't mind a wait but I want a specific set of features. I will report back here with what they have to say.

I'm very interested to see what packages and features will be available.. I know I won't be getting a First Edition, but I really wish I could get the round headlights with the creature comforts of the LC trim. They really should have put the round headlights on the higher trim

Good chance that when the parts system is updated with the new parts, one can get the LC trim parts and convert the higher trim to the lower trim.

Unless, of course, Toyota put those conversion parts on manual allocation (MAC) with VIN documentation (which they do often to deter this kind of activity and not dilute different trim levels).

I wonder if they'll do that from the start or wait til it becomes a problem. I remember the TRD Pro tacoma stuff was available back in 2017-18 when it was first launched and then so many people tried to buy Pro grilles that they locked everything up behind a VIN lookup. Maybe the 250 won't have that problem if it's not bought by the T4R/Taco tuner crowd.

Yeah, I've thought about that.. I'm not sure though if painted body panels would be involved.. Repainting a new car would probably be prohibitive. If it's simply swapping headlights, the grille, and some black plastic, that would be awesome

I might just get lucky.... It will be like a 62 / 60 facelift :)

They most likely will eventually if they see the parts moving fast without any corroboration of accident/body repair data.

I’m in the first dozen allocations for a Land cruiser trim at my local dealer with no mark up. I’m looking forward to replacing my GX460 and building up a similar themed 250 that matches my 80 series now that Toyota finally builds something I want to buy with the trail dust two tone and premium package. It’s wild how closely it mimics my retro throwback color scheme I did 10+ years ago

It’s pretty cool that starting MSRP for my cruiser in 1992 works out to being $55k in today’s money. Personally, I’m really excited for the hybrid as in town gas mileage is my main gripe with my GX460 other than it’s funky looks. If you had to compare purchasing a ‘92 3FE cruiser at its time in 1992 or the 2024 250 now, I think most would rather buy the 250. But time will tell if the 250 will even get above 400k miles on it like my cruiser has managed to do relatively problem free.
