So the :princess: and I are talking about doing a small little, tent camping trip this Mon-Wed since we are both off of work. We just started looking for places tonight and it seems that there are quite a few with first come first serve until July. So we are thinking somewhere relatively close; Los Padres NP, San Bernadino NP or Angels NF.

Any suggestions for some place scenic and cooler? We will probably take the Subaru and not the Cruza but I'm not afraid to get the Suby dirty to get away from the crowds.

If you want San Bernardino Forest.. i just found a bitchen spot over the weekend with a great view and some cooler weather at 6,000 feet. To top that off we saw a bear and a deer our first day. Place reminds me of the Sierras without the 6-8 hour drive. It's like a gem in our own backyard. I have a GPS coord and some map info if you're interested Mark.

How about the South Fork of the Kern drainage? The Kennedy meadows/Troy Meadows/Fish Meadows area. It's probably 30 degrees cooler up there. The scenery is real nice, it's usually pretty empty and you can catch a few little golden trout. I recommend this campground.

Thanks Dave, & MK.

We actually decided right before logging on to just keep it a bit closer and go to the SB Mtns. All day we were thinking of going to Sequoia but we had done it about 6 or 7 years ago so some place new would be nice. So Dave I shot you a PM.

Wow! That place looks beautiful. I noticed you gave coordinates but I dont hasve a gps. How do you get there from San Diego? I15 north to 395...???

You can punch those coords into Google Maps and it will hook you up.

Well boys we are heading out soon and have a list of 1st come 1st serve campgrounds so we will be on the phone with the Rangers on our way up and probably stop off at the station to figure out which one we will stay at....

Have fun working :flipoff2:

Had a blast! Not sure when I will get the photos up on my site as I have softball tonight, a wedding tomorrow night and my parents in town for the wedding and staying with us till' Sat. Then up to Ramona to my Aunts on Sat for the fireworks so I guess Sunday.... Yikes...

Here is a quick write-up on the trip. We ended up staying in Holcomb Flats campground for two nights. There were just three groups camping that night. Unfortunately one was an extremely inconsiderate family who game in blazing around 10:45 with kids crying & screaming bear proof trash cans slamming. Thank goodness they left the next day and the following night it was two new campers with us so just 3 of the 19 spaces were taken.
We drove so much of the area in the Suby all three days and I even got the traction control to light up a few times when I spun a wheel climbing some rocky hills. And today after checking out Hana Flats campground I took a turn too fast in the dirt and just as the rear end was losing grip the traction control kicked in and brought me back straight. I tried to do it again on the next turn but I guess I wasn't going fast enough. :meh:
Oh and also we hiked all the way to the top of 3N07A that has two old mines and it would be a killer trail in the cruisers. It is very lightly traveled after the mines and pretty overgrown. There are two fallen trees currently blocking the trail that need to be cut up and moved and the views are amazing. Anyway I took detailed photos of the whole trail and maybe one day I will get to run it. The trip really got me familiar with the area and I can't wait to go back and do some runs in the Cruiser!
Today we left cut across 3N12, which is a beautiful trail and finally saw a Yellow Post Camp Site. We wanted to compare Holcomb Campground to Hanna Flats. Totally different sites and I really prefer Holcomb, I have NEVER been in such a clean & beautiful camp. From their we detoured off of 330 to 18 to see Lake Arrowhead. I had been their when I was little but I don't remember anything about it. So we did the entire loop around and drooling over Mansion after Mansion! After that we went to Silverwood Lake well we were planning on having lunch their but instead we exited too early and ended up at a run down nasty camp site on one side, a State correctional facility in the middle and an ATV park on the right. We were starving at this point so we ate in the parking lot of the ATV area. Then a few miles down the road we came up on a massive lake. So we stopped at the overlook and took a couple of pictures before heading into the 95 deg. heat of Ontario where we finally filled up again. That was one benefit about taking the Suby we averaged 26 MPG's on a 410 mile road trip.

WOW that ended up being a little long winded. Oh well.... Don't you feel like you were with us?

OK, as promised photos are up Sunday. Album

10" of ground clearance came in pretty handy on some of these roads.

In my opinion the best spot in the Holcomb camp ground. Space #19 and #12 next to it is not bad either.

What makes these two sites great, is you were away from the main road and your looked out onto the forest with your back to the other campers.

I looked up and stopped dead in my tracks when I saw this.

We hiked 3N07A Tuesday morning and I would really like to run this with some cruisers because it sure beats hiking it!

Although we may need to get a little permission to clean it up as it is pretty overgrown at this point and there are three down trees in the trail.

And lastly a beautiful peaceful pond not far from our camp site.

So if you have your :princess: with you and she at least needs a toilet over a pit then this is a great camp site. But be sure to bring your own water because there is no running water available.
