My 1983 fj60 {238,000 miles} still has the original gas tank. Why were the tanks recalled in the first place???? Was it a safety issue that I should be concerned about??? Thanks for any reply. If it is a safety issue I may need to get it fixed as the cruiser is my daily driver.

they would build pressure in the tank and split at the seams

x2 no parts available for the tank, however i got rear seat belts replaced

Toyota is legally obligated to fix the recalled tanks for all cruisers with those tanks (no matter how old they are), so it sorta depends on how much effort you want to put into getting a new one. So a dealer saying the parts aren't available suggests they are either ignorant of the situation or don't want to put the effort in to find the parts. The dealer doesn't end up losing any money on the deal, Toyota pays for it. You could try calling Toyota of America directly and pursue from that direction. They are a little sensitive about recalls and safety now so you might get a quick response.

I currently have a split FJ-62 tank in my cruiser so it does happen. This is the first 6X series I have had that acutally had the bad tank.

So what if you have a FJ60 with a FJ62 fuel tank and pump and a Chevy engine and various other goodies???

Do you think Toyota would touch it? :grinpimp:

I would say no. They would not touch my FJ-60 with the pre-recall FJ-62 gas tank. The 60 hadn't had the recall and the 62 which the tank came from hadn't had the recall. They said that it is VIN# specific and they couldn't get me the 62 tank for a 60. I was a little annoyed, but I totally understood.

Done and Done.

Two days to order the parts. Two days for the install. Both recalls done at zero dollars to me.

Never would have known if it weren't for mud.

Group Hug!

Oh but wait. They broke a stud and left it! Man I don't trust Dealers!!!

I went to my local dealer and they confirmed PO had already done tank recall and seatbelt recall. I lucked out!

You can check for recalls on your vehicles online here. It doesn't tell you when it was done (if it was done), but it will tell you if you need it. It will say "There are no scheduled recalls for your vehicle" or something like that if it was done. I just checked my 1988 Pickup and it looks like they owe me an egr pipe replacement.

Yes a split tank sounds bad, especially at almost $4 a gallon!

I put mine in and nothing came up. I bought my used so can the dealer tell me if it has been done and when.

yes it is already done if it doesn't show online, the dealer can tell you when and where

That link would be great AK RIG, but it doesn't work when I browsed to it today, it shows but there is a message about a break or something, and then disappears. I am hoping my local Toyota Dealer won't give me the run around, just emailed them my VIN for my 90' 62, that I picked up last year from PO. This posting is most helpful. Thank you.

hey guys... I am due for the tank recall... question for those that got this done, is the filler neck / gas cap part of the tank that they replace?

My neck is mangled at the cap and causing leaks at the cap and vapors back into the cab when full... would be nice if this addressed both issues.

Hey guys, I wanted to post a follow up to my experience. As I noted a couple weeks ago, my filler neck was manged, causing vapors, and more recently raw gas to dump into the rear quarter panel in the truck because the gasket was equally mangled. My searches on this forum led me to find the recall that I confirmed I was still elible for (For the fuel tank). I was hoping to kill 2 birds w/ one stone.

Called dealer, request tank recall and inquired about filler neck - was advised the neck is not part of the parts list in the recall but they would only charge me parts and no labor since the labor was being done by dropping the tank - cost on parts, $250.

I declined this, service writer told me he would have them on order in case I changed my mind before they arrived and I came in for service.

Parts came in, scheduled my appointment and they had my truck completed by noon that same day, went to gas station after picking it up to find that they DID replace the filler neck, at no cost to me.

I matched my parts list to the one originally posted and mine was the same w/ the addition of these 4 parts:

[2] 90159-60286 Screw, W/Washer
[1] 77293-60030 Packing, Fuel Tank O
[1] 77201-60150 Pipe Sub-Assy, Fuel
[3] 96111-10630 Clamp, Hose

No complaints from me!

Just wanted to say a quick thanks to everyone for the heads up on the fuel tank replacement. I had good luck on this one (for once).

After looking up my VIN on the Toyota site, I called Toyota of Seattle and they had all the OEM replacement parts for my FJ62 in 1 day (!!), and they fixed my wagon in 2 days. The only reason it took 2 days was they noticed that the old sending unit was bad and had to order the part (again, only 1 day). The sending unit was also covered in the recall, so cost to me for the whole thing was $0.

Wouldn't have known about it if it weren't for MUD. THANKS!

So, I checked the site above and got this message: There are no open Special Service Campaigns or Safety Recalls on your vehicle.

Does that mean it's already been done?
