I have two keys for my 75 FJ55, one for the ignition and one for the rear window. I don't have a key for the door locks though, the doors are later doors I believe as they have the 1 piece windows.

Has anyone found an economical lock set that swaps in? I don't mind having a 3rd key I'd just like to be able to lock the old girl up. :)

Thanks,
Dave

Any half decent locksmith should be able to make the lock work with your key if the keyway is the same. The last one I did was $10-15 to rekey the lock on my BJ60 after someone tried to jimmy the passenger door.

Do you guys have any pics of orginal keys?

orangefj45 graciosly sent me a free key for the ignition of an early 55. Not sure if the key is oginal or not. It says Taylor on the back. Thinking its a reproduction. But your pics can help confirm!

Taylor is an aftermarket. Good though. SOR has Toy Blanks or used to but not for the some keyways. Typically, I think the old ignition I used to have was the same as the door locks. But my 7/75 has 1 key for ignition and 1 for doors and tailgate.

By the way for anyones interest I have this old door lock from a buick (part of an aftermarket replacment on and old buick we used to have). Anyway, damned if it does not line up pretty much exactly with a mid year model FJ55 door lock.

My ignition key looks oem, it is small and pretty worn. The tailgate key is definitely newer.

I figured I'd pop out one of the lock cylinders and take it to the autoparts stores and see if I could find a new one.... you never know.

Good link. I have a friend that is a locksmith...trying to remember. I think it was taylor that bought up most of the small companies, but this make me think I should post up some of the blanks I have that we have used 7/70 fj55 7/75 fj55 and 12/76 fj40: ( I will come back and edit this a little later with numbers)

Some of what I have T80U (particularly good length for cutting for the tailgate switch). Ilco TR33-P (now that I think of it I think it was ILCO that bought everyone just about) also ilco x137. Curtis TR 29, Cole TO 22 (which supposedly handles (T61E and T80U, but was a little short for the tailgate switch), Taylor T66v (for forty owners rear ambie doors), Silica-Italy TOY4. Taylor T80H

I know this is an old thread but im looking at a 55 and the guy has no keys for it so would a locksmith be able to make up all the keys for me

FWIW I had a set of door/rear gate keys made yeaterday and it was $30.00 for the first original and ~$3.00 for each copy, It took all of an hour.
The new keys for the doors are ilco #T61F and the ignition is a ilco #T61C, I have an old copy of the ignition key that is a Cole F0454/JA63
The Locksmith said they should all be the same, At least that's what his book said.

Is there a way to tell which version of a lock a person has?

SOR lists two key blanks: early to 75(discontinued) and the 75 and up which is available.

I screwed up and lost my door key that was going to be used to key my tailgate switch:mad::bang:

just a guess would be one sided key until 75 and two sided after that, since all my early locks were one sided, and my 74ish and later keys were two sided (except for an amby door lock on later model 40s, but that lock is an early side door lock, so it's kind of a trick).

definitely find someone to verify that though as it's just a w.a.g.

I vote yes on this. My 7/70 had the dash ignition which was a one sided key and the 75 is the column two sided. Cool Cruisers has a 40 style ignition cylindar and key posted on its site. (but keep in mind that cylindar is shorter and fatter)

So that would make this a late model NOS tailgate switch with a pair of the original double sided keys! :)

:hhmm: My door keys (double sided) on both operated the tailgate switch;)

But you got my old 7/70 ignition switch years ago...was it single or double sided?

Edit: and those keys on your tg switch look similar to the ignition keys posted on Cool Cruisers for older style ignitions. :hhmm:

I can't recall other than that the in dash switch for the '55 and the '40 are different (the '55 fits in a smaller hole in the dash) so that switch is now with another 'mudder. I found an old '40 switch that does work and I've had that keyed to fit.
