Wouldn't dare.

Maybe we'll just road trip it out there and help wrench a couple of days.

You know I'm just giving you s*** :). Although, if you did find your way out there, you might do it so you could do the 45 run in a couple of weeks with Georg...

Might want to check with Burger King Cruiser to see if he has any appliances that need attention?

A pic from the left coast with the front mocked up.

2 - 2.5 weeks of downtime huh? If that's the case, then I guess you wouldn't be too terribly upset if I tried to hire Bill and Kevin Auto Transport to bring a certain pig halfway to MS...maybe Albuquerque'ish.

pig? :hmm:

yeah, I think I saw Joel posting pics of the progress on FB...

:flipoff2:
actually, that was Bill's handiwork. top of the slabs two rubithons ago. wasn't on his rig though.

T-minus 22 days or so til the wagon train leaves Cali for crawl. Apparently the transmission and steering cooling fans needed to be relocated for the rear brackets. The rear axle is placed and links should arrive on Wednesday.

so some stuff actually got done on kermit this weekend. I have some other pics, but I'm kinda hungry and need a sammich. for now, here's Bill cutting a link for kermit. note him modelling the prototype Stayner Safety Sandal{tm}. yesterday, the prototype underwent welding slag, metal shavings, and a garage that looks like someone exploded a junkyard with 400 lbs of ANFO - all with minimal yelping, cursing, or bleeding.

a careful eye might have noticed the reddish-white link material and wondered what it was. the red is from all the fires in the area that have done wonderful things for all the blue skies we usually have this time of year. after the glow of the fire is removed, it's just plain old PVC pipe. it's taking too long to get the links Heather actually wants, so the truck is getting built with PVC pipe. it'll help keep the weight down, and as long as she doesn't land a link on a rock or anything, it should hold up more or less fine. it also provides a safety fuse for the welds on the axles and frame, as those can tear off easily. spare parts aren't a problem, just bring a ten foot chunk or two of PVC and a hacksaw, and you're back and wheelin. try THAT with DOM links.

with the link issue dealt with, it was time to start welding. when welding, it's important to consider how heat can distort the metal you are welding. therefore, it is wise to pause momentarily to allow the metal to cool during welding to keep it from getting too hot. it is also important to remain hydrated when welding while it's 95 degrees out. Beer, of course, is the preferred method of hydration.

so, for example, this:

is about a six pack.

at this point, I became bored with the weld-two-inches-stop-drink-a-beer and decided to go huff ether in the motorhome.:hillbilly:

earlier I mentioned worries about yanking welds off axles. unfortunately, the world is full of people who view a MIG as nothing more than a hot glue gun. people like these also come up with bad ideas of how to widen axles, like this
IMG_1270.webp

would you believe me if I told you it leaks oil?

other people that drive me bonkers: people who can free-hand eyeball cut a straight line with a saw. I can't draw a straight line with a pencil and a ruler.

a couple of minor complications popped up. first, the transfer case is so massive that the originally planned location for the rear crossmember wasn't going to work. this required shifting things back a tad
IMG_1264.webp

second, the link mounts for the upper control arms ended up being a lot higher than desired due to the height of the pumpkin. this means a little more lift than originally planned will be required

but looking how everything sits at this point, it'll have decent stance at that height.

I think Bill would be much more productive without having someone taking pictures and offering commentary on the build. That person would be most useful making food/beverage runs for Bill.

I'm not so sure Bill needs an enabler in that capacity. :)

Did your iCrap console show up?.... I sent it directly to Bill.

It sure did. And it's awesome!!!! But you need to badge it so people know where it came from. When FC stopped by he really liked it and is interested in using them in customers trucks. I'll hook you two up.
