Hey guys just got my 77 FJ55 on the road a couple days ago and have a couple of questions. I have never had one before and was wondering what most of your guys 55's max speed is. The truck drives great and almost seems like it needs a 5th gear.

on the freeway in fresno, in fourth gear, my tach was sayin 3300, my speedo said 78. I was passing the cars in the outside 2 lanes...5 speed would be great in any pig;) Nice truck. Congrats!

Thanks man, I haven't gotten it over 50 yet, it seems like 3rd gear starts around 35 or 40 and I didn't want to drive it to fast not knowing how fast these trucks were meant to go. Can't believe you got yours up to 78, animal

I had half the pedal left:p. before the powerplant upgrade, I would typically shift around 15 into second, then about 30 into third and between 45 and 55 for the transition to fourth, depending on the grade...if you're not sure your motor is up to the task, try to keep it below 3K, and cruise around 25-2700 rpms. bumper is cool, but your front doors are pointed;p

with 33s and stock 4:10 gears and chevy 350, the 4 speed works great. I can shift to 4th and pull it at 15 MPH, plus it will do 80 when brakes and suspension want to cooperate...

nice rig.

Nice Piggy!
Are those 33's on there?
The 4.11 gearing does seem to want a 5th gear, but that rubber overdrive of the 33 inch tire make 70 do-able, provided that brakes and suspension are in good shape.
Someone took some time on that rear bumper...

Thanks they are 33's on it. The brakes and suspension are in good shape, probably since the truck spent most of its life in cali until it came to the east coast a couple of months ago

Thanks for letting me know what speeds you shift into gear, think those were the speeds I was shifting at. The bumper fits the truck pretty well and kind of like the way it looks for a custom bumper. What do mean my front doors are pointed? I'm new to 55's so any knowledge or info you have for me is much appreciated. Are the doors suppose to be round at the bottom on a 77?

55 speed

Matt- congrats on the pig, keep it nice and happy or Jeff might want it back! I can go 65 or so without problems in my 55, it has 33's and a V8. At 64MPH I am taching 3000RPM. I don't drive either of my land cruisers much faster than that. Gary S

I am digging your wheels. would love a setup just like that on mine. its on my christmas wish list already however all I'm getting is weather stripping, trollhole carb, and $OR new front/rear seats... oh wait now I am in debt.....

good luck and looks good.

65 is a good speed. any faster and you can invite accidents both with other cars or rods through blocks IMHO.

there is going to be a huge speed difference with the 2F vs. a V8

you have the stock 2F?

I'd recommend getting a $40 tach from the local parts store to keep an eye on things. Super easy to wire up.

I have 33s, stock 2F, 3.73 gears out of a FJ60 and stock 4 speed. My motor is trying to come through the hood at 3K rpms, so I keep it around 2500-2700. Thats running 55-60 mph...speedo reads lower due to the tire size.

5 speeds were never an option here in the states, but you can swap the Toyota H55 5 speed in pretty painless. Just takes $$$.

I've never had my speedo touch 60.

Thanks Gary, I'm really enjoying the pig and needed to get it on the road after losing one of my best friends since I was ten 3 weeks ago. Been having a rough couple of weeks and getting the pig on the road and driving it for the first time was great. Nothing clears my head more and gets me more relaxed than a nice drive up to the beach. Hopefully going to get it back to its nice 2 tone paint job by spring.

onemanarmy I think I'm going to swap gears down the road as well to make it a little more highway friendly. My pig has the stock 2F in it and going to get a tach for it, so I can keep an eye on the rpms when driving.

Very cool to hear the Pig is therapuetic during these tough times...

Take it easy, hope you can enjoy little things (like cruising in the Pig) right now.

Thanks man, I always get in good mood when I jump into one of my cruisers. The pig couldn't of came at a better time and since it was my first time ever owning or driving one, I enjoy it that much more. Been getting a lot of what the fxxx looks and thumbs up when I drive by people in it. Definitely have a different outlook on life after losing someone this close and really just trying to stay positive and not drink like a animal. Will be putting some serious miles on this pig over the winter

Was your 55 solid red from the factory?

Hey i'm not sure, the inside looks like its all factory red paint on it and there isn't any white on the inside. I'm new to 55's and thought they only came in 2 tone, I didn't know they came stock as one color. I can't tell if the paint is original on the outside and just looks more orange from fading in the California sun or if it was repainted.
