Joe, you probably already thinking this, but if you decide not to join us, send me the locations of the areas you were thinking and I'll plug them into the GPS...
Hey Guys yeah I am officially out, this sinus cold sucks dong and isn't getting any better.
Just NW of the campsite is an area we ran trails, it is the Big Levels area. You take FR91 north which merges with 614, then get on FR42 heading west. Less than 10 mi will be a trailhead on your left, it may be FR162. If you missone trailhead, there'll be 2 more on your left.
If you like, you can take the BRP to the FR where the schoolbus is - ask a local, they should be able to tell you where this is, and that will put you into the same trails from the southern direction.
Farther south is Shoe Creek between FR61 and VA Rt 56, it's a bunny trail and the northern end is right at Crabtree Falls.
Anyway, this is all on Page 54 of the DeLorme Gazetteer. Between FR42 (northern boundary) and the Blue Ridge Parkway (southern boundary) is where the trails are.
I also wanted to explore the area between the BRP and VA 151 directly east of the campground, there are numerous FR's and trails marked 4wd/Jeep. This is on page 55 of the Gazetteer.
I hope you all have a wonderful trip and I am terribly disappointed I cannot make it after all.
OK, I don't have a Virginia Gazeteer, actually I don't have a NC one either... Unless someone else has one, I'll pick one up on my way to meet Ramon...
Quick summary of the trip - Jared and I got up there to meet the rest of the crowd around 8:30 Friday night. Took a little time to get camp setup and then relax in the mild mountain air with a cold beverage with a great group of people. Saturday we packed up for a day of adventure around the Forest area. We started off at Crabtree Falls but got caught in a downpour so we packed back up and went to venture some FSR while the rained subsided, we got back to the falls around noon saturday and spent the afternoon making the 1.7 mile moderate hike to the top of the falls. I'll let Brian speak on agreeing to make a later hike through Crabtree Meadows that ended with an additional 3 mile hike. I tend to lead a group better than I do on an individual basis. I did however end up where we had planned. Sunday we broke down camp and hit the trails. We spoke with a local Saturday evening before dinner and he gave us a good scope of what was around and how to get to it - Jared and I even got in a quick scouting run with him that evening.
All in all I have to thank all those that made it and helped out with Saturdays dinner, I think I speak for the group in saying it was delicious...even if you had to wait till we got back from Amhurst with the Charcoal...
We ended Sunday with a nice meal at Devils Backbone Brewery just south of Wintergreen
Here's a few photos and I am sure others will post up as well.
Great times! The group dinner was a huge hit with tons of excellent food and fellowship. While the Sherando Lake itself left something to be desired for watersports, the facilities (barring a broken water heater) were top notch! I particularly enjoyed the late night, hops induced philosophical discussions Here's a few shots from the highlight reel:
Garrett in his custom fit PFD
Keefer model tug boat
Emma getting hooked on kayaking.
Jared crossing a beautiful FSR bridge.
The stables at Crabtree Falls
"This hike is more than I anticipated, Dad. But this sure is fun!"
Look for the people in the bottom middle of the photo for perspective of how huge this waterfall is. This is just one small portion of the whole thing!!
