Mine looks just like that. I just used a shorter piece of hose.

awesome......well I am going to put the kick plate back on and move to the fuel system and getting that straight. Lash and Jeff..thanks for the input.....and by the way....I endedup doing a "radiator flush" despite your warning. but it was actually a good thing since it needed to be changed.

Would you believe Gray-Daniels in Brandon can NOT order a fuel pump gasket I am going to have to order one through auto zone. Crazy...is there one gasket sealer that you think is better than any other? I want to get this new mech fuel pump on and be DONE with fuel delivery issues for 20 years!!

Something that resist gas for sure. Permatex surely makes one. Might not need it on the gasket though. Do some checking to see what others have done on that specific gasket.

I ordered the fuel pump gasket a couple months ago at Herrin Gear Toyota on 55 North Frontage. Picked it up 3 days later.

Holy Mother of Rust

So here is a picture of the finished heater bypass cap...it isn't to pretty but passengers should be looking at pretty outdoor scenery, not my floor board right...and it's up out of the way.

Also attached are some fun pics I took after removing my rear door seal.....awesome....just a reminder the original project was painting the inside of the tub which I haven't even started......ghhaaaa:bang:

looks like someone, aaheemm PO, put some black tacky stuff over the rust then put the rear seal cap back on OVER the rust....which then proceded to go to town on the metal.

Thanks Lash...ill check with them if auto zone can't order it..they gave me a 2 day turn around when I called earlier. Kind of ticked at Gray-Daniels for not ordering such a simple part.

Did you get to your pump from underneath. I haven't even looked at it yet in depth, but I imagine that getting a screw driver to those 2 screws is easier from underneath than going around the battery, engine wall, radiator hoses, etc. from the top?.......your's start leaking or what?

Mine quit in the middle of "The Canyon" trail at GreyRock. I had my Toyota spare and gasket because the one that failed was obviously aftermarket and I didn't trust it. Jeff Davis and I swapped it after pulling the battery out. It was very hard to get to. Be sure you get all the old gasket/sealer/etc off the mounting surface.

that sucks.....will definitely NOT look forward to removing it, but will make sure I get a good clean surface for the new gasket.....thanks

That's funny. Same engine in a different truck (60) and the task is stupid simple.

you wouldn't believe how tight it is around the fuel pump because of the radiator, and lack of space between the block and inside fender.....I might actually have to buy a shorter screw driver to get in there......and all that with the ample space in a 40 engine bay is ridiculous.

I have some tools that may work in the tight space. I can bring them by thursday morning. You could also remove the fender to make everything easier.

I need to look tomorrow and see what kind of screws it has and go ahead and put some kroil on it. I HOPE that they put the electric pump in for some reason OTHER than they couldn't get the old mech pump off....we shall see.

Removing the old fuel pump

OK...I jumped in and removed the electric pump completely and have the mechanical pump ready to go back on. Lash....I ended up underneath to do it...hey it worked right? All I am waiting on is my gasket to come in. I have test fitted the new fuel pump the in/out lines are ready, cleaned where the fuel pump goes and have sealant ready to go on as well.

removing the electric pump

here are some shots of the fuel lines without the elec pump anymore (I have a shot with the elec pump if someone reading this is doing the same thing....the PO figured it was easier for this pump to PUSH the fuel to the carb...I am hoping that is part of why it was sluggish...we will see.

Last thing to determine is if that second line coming from the side of the tank (return line) can be removed/capped because the other end is just dangling in the engine bay and doesn't hook to the system anywhere.

Amazing what can get done when you have more than 2 days off in a row and a mother in law to watch the little one.....

headed to Auto zone.

DUN.....D...O.....N...E!!!

Holy Hell.....don't try to put gasket sealer on a fuel pump and guide it in from the bottom.....rrrriiiidiculous......BUT......DUN....hopefully forever....of course the test is to put gas in the tank, hook up the battery and crank her to check for leaks....ya'll cross your fingers and get a drip pan!

Upon further investigation and taking my old pump apart the rubber diaphragm was shot..instead of checking it the PO put an electric pump in....which I learned do work better being close to the tank as they push gas and mech pumps pull gas better.....but hey...still hoping this solves the fuel issue...if not you'll see lots about carbs coming in my thread.

Nice work. What did you use other than the gasket?
