Painting....finally

So I got some time this afternoon to remove the bib and start the paint process. I am priming the bib now and will do the hood Thursday as well as finish the bib.

also degressed, wire wheeled, wire brushed, sand papered, the front frame and cleaned it up with some RO black. I managed to get all the rust off the inside of the fendors and you can see in the below pic where it's the new RO green. I won't fool with the rest of the engine bay and what I did paint will not last, but it will help inhibit any rust return.

Thanks to Andy for some good advice on doing the bib and frame clean up

Not a Toyota......but a cool history

I would have painted more on the cruiser but I moved to this.

It's a 1965 ford mustang pedal car. My maternal grandfather bought it for my oldest cousin and it has since gone through 7 of us. Now it has returned to me to refurbish for my little girl. I never knew my grandfather so it's kinda fun to touch something he worked on.

He was an incredible mechanic and actually worked on Amelia Earharts airplanes while he lived out west. My favorite story was when they drained Bogahoma lake he found a 5 horsepower engine. He took it home and in a month had replaced every little part. When they finished the work on the lake and it was refilled he went out with a john boat and put the engine on the back. He cranked it and it ran perfectly..........

straight to the bottom!!!!!! in his excitement he and his buddy forgot to bolt it down first!!!!!

negative........the wheels are "balanced" for the pic but not bolted on...I put a coat of white on them proped it up for the pic. I did spray them white and then promptly sanded through it! but itll get fixed....good eye though

painting

first let me say....i decided long ago to do a "preservation" and not a restoration as I have neither the knowledge, money, or time. This rattle can job will give me a year or 2 to save more money, wheel it, and determine what I want to do......that being said the first coat of paint is on the front of the truck.

comments, advice, be-moanings, jokes, sarcasm are all welcome BUT I like the color....will look better after wet sanding and 3 more coats.

and some more cruiser porn...if you care

underside of hood is getting 2 coats, top is getting 4 to attempt withstanding the sun for a while.

the bib got 2 coats primer and some rust work and then 4 coats of paint....it has a few rough spots but should hold up well to the blistering 50 mph bug impacts:D

Looking good, but you gotta pull the grill and spray it black.

yeah I will.....i'm waiting to spray my hood latches, the grill, etc. all at once.

still painting

here is where i am...hood hinges, and hooks are drying (new coat of black paint) just made some new rubber gaskets for them too.

Lash....the grill is black just for you.....but gotta paint and re attach the Toy emblem

stuff not on yet is all new bolts on everything on the hood, bib, etc. made new gaskets for the kick panels and installed them. got the antennae wired back up, bolted the font bumper back on...yadda yadda yadda....im shooting to be at the next meeting in it.....whether the rear quarters are done or not.

If you can get the apron emblem off take it off and spray the whole thing with a light coat of black. Don't tape anything off. Let it dry then take some steel wool and buff off the top of the letters. Good as new. (I promise) The black will come right off the chrome plating.

good tip.....I tore the right side (as you look at it) getting it off because the screw was so rusted....it wouldn't let go and took the sun baked plastic with it. I may attempt to salvage it and will try your method....sounds good.

If it is plastic then it is not the OEM badge. Toss it and get a new one. They are nearly free on CCOT.

The old metal ones are the ones you want to try to keep and polish and such IMO

I use model airplane paint on the front grill Toyota emblem.

IF by over $40 you mean free for the badge then why don't you give me some free stuff?:grinpimp: I could buy alot of baby formula with that! but I will inevitably end up doing it anyway....cus Nolan said too...

Nolen doesn't know what he's talking about. The 74-83 apron abdges were plastic. 73 and down were metal. Front emblem for your year is plastic as well.

BTW, I have several apron badges at home that I have redone that you are welcome to. You will have to figure out a way to attach them since the pins that go through the metal are broken.

im good Jeff.....my apron ones are ok.....the front one has a small hole instead of the right side pin connector so ill probably have to get a new one.....where were you at lunch......them soap operas can't be better than Inez burgers!
