To put 60 power steering on a 40

Looking at this thread again - looks like the U Joints are the same as ones used on a driveshaft of a 68 to 74 Corolla with the 1200CC engine.

napaonline.com does not show a 1200 cc option for a '68 & '69 Corolla (shows 1.1 L), but they show PUJ 395 as the u-joint...

1970 shows a 1.2 L, but also pulls PUJ 395 as u-joint.

1971 and up shows a 1.6L and a 1.2L version of Corolla: 1.6L pulls different p/n (PUJ 394)

In 1975 they made the 1.2 and the 1.6L pull the same p/n u-joint: PUJ 394 which is 1.024"

We want PUJ 395 for our steering columns, which is 0.788"

Looks like NAPA updated their part numbers: Universal Joint (U-Joint)

UJS UJ395

Ordering 2 of these u joints for my july85 fj60, play in the steering and getting gearbox rebuilt by redhead, will update how it goes on the early 60 model. No press either, so ill post a video for everyone on how tapping em by hammer goes...

All installed, the corolla u joints went in great, along with the rebuilt gearbox from redhead. finishes it up a few days ago. As promised, here's a tiny video of tapping em in... it's is easy once you figure it out. Hadn't done it before. Taking the old u joint out is a similar process, take a slightly smaller socket you dont care about and punch out each bearing at a time. I find getting the clips out with a screwdriver+pliers works best. Dont shoot them across the room like I did....🤣 wear glasses

The part numbers I gave them: UJS UJ395

I have the ever so slightest amount of play in the rear u- joint (see video), going to grease the zerk just a tad (these come with a zerk fitting you can attach on there)..(dont over grease these guys or any other zerk....).
So far I'm happy with it, was pretty funny telling NAPA when they asked vehicle year that I was transplanting a corolla part on the land cruiser. I'll test drive in a couple days gunna do precise Toe and alignment after test drive.

I could not get the zerk fitting on the u joint in with the clip, so it seems you have to pull the clip to grease the u joints at a later time. so save em.

REMINDER *** ALWAYS double/triple check everything with steering stuff... just do it. Very dangerous to do it wrong. If you're unsure have someone who knows look at it, its life or death with TRE and steering shafts in case any newbies are reading this... lots of guys have mechanics do this job instead.. I was one a newbie not long ago and had a buddy with me for this job too... ***

Thanks to everyone who found this part!

Cheers!
Dan

Thanks for the detailed write up. Something I will tackle next year once the 60 is back from its sabbatical out west.
