In the gasket world, Viton-A is commonly infused with a cinnamon smell to help distinguish between it and EPDM. I doubt, however, this is the case with the scepter gaskets, plus they would smell like fuel if used. Probably your best bet would be to start afresh.
 
If the gaskets are original they will not be viton. Any GI can I get I change the gasket proactively regardless. The only way to be certain if it is a viton gasket is if you buy a new civilian can with a red strap on the cap.
