The snow on the next range over (the JARBIDGE MOUNTAIN RANGE, by Gawd!) looked fresh and deep, the snow and clouds a perfect contrast to the blue sky and green vegetation...

As we continued on the trail, dropping down, we could see snow off (not pictured) to the sides of the road at the base of the trees which are growing on the downhill side of the mountain...

We had put off lunch, hoping to find a good spot. Andrew was so famished that he had to dip into his survival stash of granola bars that mom packed for him when we stopped at the top.

A few minutes later, Dan and Andy, who had continued on, radio back that a most epic lunch spot had been located.

We are in a stand of trees that had me feeling like we could be in the Sierras. The air is crisp for once (it was actually pretty humid all week, but good temps) the sky is a perfect blue, and there is a raging creek running next to us.

Andy whips up some delicious dogs and brats, the hot meal was perfect to offset the chilly air...

We change climates every five minutes, each one mind-blowingly beautiful.

First up a wet, muddy patch cutting through some Aspens...

Then across a high altitude meadow with an incredible endless view...

Leaving the Humboldt National Forest...

We continue on the trail that will surely lead us right over the edge...

The trail through the high sage plateau, pictured in Cameron's photos above, that would lead us to the high edge of the Jarbidge river canyon was chock full of relatively clean water holes. Big water holes. So big, as you see in the side photo of my 100 above, they had the effect of countless mini car washes. Much of the mud, or so I thought while hitting each of the big water holes at speed, got washed off.

Mostly it was just the illusion of mud being washed off :D

Even after $40 in quarters and four rounds at self-serve's all the way and into Omaha...with each passing rain the spressoWAGON is still depositing Nevada mud onto my parents driveway :D

We begin the final descent into Jarbidge, the Promised Land, in what has to be one of the most epic, grandest views so far, my phone pics doing it absolutely no justice...

Off to the left someone has put in a pretty sweet pad that, assuming they don't get wiped out by an avalanche, has the view all to themselves...

We drive slow, savoring the last of the view as wind our way down the final stretch of trail, right before it drops us off in Jarbidge...

We park our trucks and take a stroll through the town, which takes all of about five minutes.

The town seems dead, other than a few older ladies who stop to ask us how long we're in town for and highly recommend camping at the campground down the street.

We celebrate our reaching our destination by stopping in at the local watering hole, where Dan buys a round.

Besides the waitress, who btw, go totally wasted last night and is having a rough day today, and the other kind of pussy in Dan's pic, there was quite the display of local wildlife...

Even found one giving the 'mud salute!

That's 1/2 a Pheasant...and 1/2 a Chukar...

What's it called? :D :flipoff2:

It's now 5:00 or so, and time to find a place to camp for the night. We decide to check out the free camping in town, but get there and it is just depressing. We're also creeped out by the number of times old ladies have stopped to ask us how long we're going to be in town and try and get us to stay at the campground. We think it might be a trap :D

We're at a pretty good elevation, so we need to find something protected from the wind. The Andy, Tom & Dan are looking at trails on the map and topographical lines trying to find the magic combination that might produce the perfect campsite. Someone remembers seeing a trail on the way in, so we take off to check it out.

Not wanting a repeat episode of last night, we don't need to take any chances on a sketchy trail - we just need something close and easy to get to.

----This is where it would be really handy to have a freeze-frame and Waylon Jennings' voice come on like in the Dukes of Hazzard... :D---

You're probably wondering about the shovel and the Jarbidge Shovel Brigade.

It has to do with a bunch of freedom lovin' red-blooded
Americans fed up with the Federal
government knowing what's best for 'em...

For those of you looking for a bit more quality in your journalistic reading, try this New York Times article:

So after we sucked down a beer a piece at the Jarbidge Bar, other than Andrew wasn't even allowed to sit with us at the bar ("Nevada law") and before I had a chance to think about shots to celebrate being liberated from the mud pits not 24-hours earlier we started discussing how nice it would be to get to a camp spot early enough to enjoy the late afternoon...drink another beer or three and prep/eat dinner before dark.

Right.
