Please note befuddled look on face of innocent bystander in pushmi-pullyu image above, wondering why this potentially super effective rescue technique did not work.

Just a little recap of the event. We met up at the gas station and decided it was best to go inside and soak up their heat instead of standing around being chilly in the parking lot. Quick introductions since we had guests and repeat offenders that wanted to see what we were up to. 5 members and 4 guests was the final count. It was pointed out at sometime during the day that we were named the Colorado Land Cruiser Club and there was only 1 LandCruiser in attendance. I commented that there was vehicle LandCruiser and Land Cruiser the club. We did have 5 fine Lexus today and a Taco as upholders of the Toyota brand. We proceeded to the plowed parking lot of McDs to air down so we didn't loose any valve caps in the snow. Vic led the group up the hill and we started down FR307. There was great communication between everyone to inform when trucks were clear of the bottom or top of slippery hills to let the following truck when to start the hill. Vic had enough fun plowing through the snow and pulled over and let others have a chance to break a trail. At the start of 307 there was about 4 inches of snow and when we got to the bottom of the canyon there was a foot on fresh on the trail and off the trail was 18 inches of old snow with the foot of new on top. I was bringing up the rear and started hearing the guys in front on the radio talking about getting to the end of the trail and where to turn around. Then they talked about getting out traction boards and shovels. That is when I found a good spot to turn around and headed back to the clearing with Vic. I drove off to the wide spot in the road to get out of the way of the others and got stuck in some icy ruts. Can't back up, can't go forward must be stuck. I hooked a strap from my front to Vic's rear and he proceeded to pull me forward and he ended up not being able to move. I was still stuck but in a new place. Jeremy hooked up to Vic, and Vic got out and then got me going. Pretty soon the crowd from the end of the road cam out and told us tales of multiple stuck trucks and lots of use of traction boards. We all headed back and then took the right turn onto FR313. we continued on to 323A and then 311 back to 307 and then 307A. On 311 there is a challenging section that was even more challenging because of the deep snow and then you squeeze between rocks then uphill to squeeze between trees then more rocks and exposed roots. Some made it through with help of traction boards and some went straight through after everyone else packed the snow down and exposed the rocks and roots to see where not to go. It was a great day. No one broke or lost any equipment. A few trucks did get a new stripe or 2.

Here are some miscellaneous images from yesterday‘s trail run.

I can add in a summary of what happened to us down near the end of the trail after Vic stopped at the wide spot and several of us continued on.

I made it nearly to the end of the trail before coming across a log partway across the trail. I tried to drive over it, but just pushed it along. I radioed back that there was a log across the trail and that if people were in the wide spot that it might be best to turn around there. I think a truck or two tried that and found VERY deep snow. Meanwhile, I managed to move the log enough that I could squeak by and I went as far along the trail as I could before trying to turn around. Again, very deep snow and I thought I'd managed to get myself stuck, but I ended up being able to very slowly get turned around. Everyone else decided turning around at the wide spot wasn't going to end well and we all decided to bring the trucks down to my end for a turn around.

In the process of all that, we managed to get Hoffa's 80 slightly stuck, but a minute of digging and a set of traction boards sorted him out, and he headed back up the trail. Meanwhile, we played tetris and got everyone turned back around, now with me at the end of the group. Just as we started back up the trail, we got word that Hoffa was good-n-stuck, and man, was he. Forrest tried several times with his big ole jeep to yank him out and only managed to dig some small craters in the snow. Rather than keep digging, we disconnected the jeep and broke out the shovels traction boards. Every time we got Hoffa out, he reached the end of the boards, and promptly sank again.

We finally said screw it and got the winch out, and winched him out of the snow bank onto traction boards, then on to SLIGHTLY more solid snow. At that point, he was able to drive out. Next up was the Paul in the Ranger, and he gave it a good two or three tries before we got his diff stuck on top of a traction board. Another small game of Tetris got me back behind the ranger, and I was able to use the kinetic rope to yank him out backwards. In the process, I was able to work my way up the hill a bit higher and build a semi-road away from the snowdrift/ditch we all kept landing in. Ranger Paul was able to mostly follow this higher route, and he took another few tries but eventually managed to drive himself through the sticky spot, while only narrowly missing the winch tree at the end!

Once the road was made, myself, followed by Taco Paul and GX Tim, all managed to squeak through with some liberal skinny pedal usage! I'm sure there are plenty of photos of our debacle just waiting to be uploaded!

I heard more than one comment about going out again this weekend... anyone serious about that?

I definitely cannot, however, I have plans to head up Yankee Hill (it's near Central City/Blackhawk) on Feb 9 with a friend of mine who has a new Bronco. Paul (yellow ranger) and Forrest (big ole Jeep) might join depending on their plans, and Paul (blue taco) is also a maybe.

It's a long drive from you guys (probably 2 hours?), but you guys are always welcome to head up this way if you want to tag along. I think we'll be meeting around 830 at the trailer/chain up area here:

39°48'43.5"N 105°32'24.2"W
Google Maps

I can make a separate thread if there's enough interest in joining us that day.

I won't be able to make it on the 9th.

Man am I sad I missed this!!
Looks like a ton of fun. My Toyota is almost back together from the wreck, and I’ll try to make a couple runs this year.

The green 4runner got wrecked? What happened?
Wife and I were headed to a concert in town, rolling east bound on Hwy 24 at 31st street, right in front of Rudy’s. Some young girl in a Tahoe decided she didn’t want to be in the turn lane anymore, and drove into our lane. There was a Chevy truck in the right lane, and no where for me to go. Ended up with $13,000 worth of damage, and she had no insurance.
She started telling the cops we were speeding, and changed lanes… I listened to all of this, grinning, and asked if she wanted to see the dash cam footage. Shut her down pretty quick. To add Insult to injury, they don’t tow vehicles for having no insurance anymore- so the cop handed that loser back all of her bogus information, told her to have a nice day, and let her drive off. My insurance only covered $1500 in custom equipment, so this has cost me a fortune putting my rig back together. The Southern Style bumper held its own and saved the vehicle frame, but was badly twisted at the end.
