It wasn’t the same route out the last time I ran it, we chose a very peaceful route out, you could probably find a couple folks that might want to just meet at the camp spot and miss the excitement of metal scraping against rocks.

It's not the excitement of metal scrapping rocks but bones pitching already bulging discs.:(

Wilma has us all outsmarted! ;)

I don't recall metal scraping.

When I bought my five speed I worked a deal to get other items one of which was the skid plate. In Australia they came them bash plates. That actually makes more sense because I've bashed the skid plates more then skid on them. Usually in a boulder field like the one described above.

Agreed, no sheet metal was harmed in making that track. Just some undercarriage scrapes on rocks, was fairly minimal just trying to say there are alternate routes John could take that would be less aggressive and keep his back in good shape.

@Funner , John would enjoy the trip I think. If he really wants to avoid the route over the mountain then the path in from the Klondike side is very easy to pass. There are just a few steep banks of sand in and out of the creeks.

@Living in the Past if you want the directions to where we will camp, pm me. There will be a few others that will come in from the Klondike side

If Tina decides to go and wants to bring the trailer, then we might go the "alt" route. I have been there before and can lead people in if need be.

Diffs and u-bolt skid plates will get a granite polish. I have a long time removed trans/transfer skid plate, no problems at all. The boulder field is just a bumpy PITA when the fatigue sets in at the end of the run and the passengers are asking "Are we there yet"?;)

The wash crossings aren’t too bad at all, we camped out at the ‘best’ spot in October. It was so beautiful. Roads were wash boarded the back way in but that’s about it.

And I am out. Have a good run everyone.

Bummer Dimples!

Does anyone else have a gas chainsaw they can bring; OR > we all should try to bring some firewood along for the night.

Thoughts?

I have a gas chainsaw if anyone wants to try it. It hasn't been started for years. It was running fine when I last used it.

If you bring it by, I can try it and If working we can add it to the inventory for this trip.

@murf can you post up the start time and meeting location? I'm assuming that we have a few coming in from the Klondike side to a Turkey creek just for the camping and they should set up a meeting spot for the Phoenix crew. @brices123 and possibly @Wilma83 and @Living in the Past plus one or two others can hold the campsite for us.

The Rug road crew should probably plan an early meet at the gas station in Mammoth, Circle K I think, to top off before the run. Caravan down will be an early departure for most from Phoenix. The route down takes about two hours, add gas up time and chit chat we are looking at 30 to 40 minutes in mammoth.

I'm looking forward to this run, hoping that @Stepmurr will be joining since it is in his back yard.

If I really correctly, the drive from Phoenix to Turkey Creek is probably 3:30 to 4:30 hours. It is almost 200 miles, the last 45 of which are on dirt (granted 30 of those are on a fast, washboard road!) I do not mind leaving really early Saturday morning in order to get to the camping spot. @aztlctina will sleep in the car the whole way. So, those of you wanted to come in from the east, let me know what time works best for you.

@murf @Saddletramp - Based on my photo history, we left Mammoth about 7:30am and arrived at the camping spot at 2:00pm (via Rug Road). We were only two vehicles, so depending on the number of trucks, it might take you a little longer.

Thanks Brice, sounds like there will be a few trucks like yourselves coming in from the Klondike side to meet the RUg Road group and secure the camping spot. The first post has been updated , reposted here as well:

UPDATE:
January's ROTM will be in the SE part of our state. For Valley dwellers, we will meet Saturday January 13th @ 7:00am at the Gold Canyon Chevron. Here is the address: 3265 S Goldfield Rd, Apache Junction, AZ 85219. Please allow for enough time to get there as we are trying to stay on schedule and pull out around 7:15?

We will then drive to Mammoth and arrive in around 8:40am. We will do a final top off at the Circle K gas station (has only 2 pumps) located here: 307 AZ-77, Mammoth, AZ 85618. We can meet at the gas station and head out from there.
We will want to hit dirt and be on the trail at 9:00AM.

Looking forward to it! Murf
