So I guess the snow level is down below 3000ft.
I want to go do some wheeling tomarrow. What would be a good spot for some easy wheeling? I am taking the hilux so I will not have my get out of jail free card (lockers) I do have chains. I want to stay in the sanberdo and ajacent areas. I could do Cleghorn it is always fun after some low snow. What do you guys think. And anyone is always welcome. We will be doing a later morning start 10am? I have to help my buddy work on his winch before I leave.

Hat - you prefer chains front or rear? I've read the debates, but your a user...I assume on occasion. Headed to Big Bear at o dark hundred tomorrow morning. Was scheduled to be leaving now, but power is out in Green Valley Lake where we're supposed to stay, so that kills tonight.

Right now chains are required on ALL vehicles, no exceptions, including full time 4wd with snow tires.

only 2 or 3 time last 14years i prefer front and rear for good traction but you can put on rear if snow under 1' for easy :steer:

I was leaning toward front for steering control on the windy mountain roads we'll be on. Don't have two sets. I the 15 years of cruiser ownership and the snow driving I've done, I've never had to put chains on her, but San Berdo Mtns tonight and presumabley early tomorrow moring will be chains on everything, no exceptions for 4wd.

Definitely check before you head out in the morning. Last time I checked 330 and 38 were closed. 18 was open in some places. And, chains for all vehicles. I was thinkin' about rollin' up to let the kids play in the snow. But I'm leaning towards going up around Idyllwild instead. Big Bear is going to have a lot of people heading up this weekend.

Yep, but no choice. We've had this trip on the troop books for a year now. Believe me, we'll check before we leave in the morning.

330 and 18 are open - chains on all vehicles.

Well, you lucked out on your weekend choice. There's gonna be a load of snow up there. Have a good one...

We cancelled the trip at 3:00 this morning. :crybaby:

Caltrans was showing 330 at the 18 junction in Running Springs closed for 'adverse weather conditions' and a real person at CHP said it was open with chains only, but 'crazy' up there. Only two of the 7 drivers even own 4WD and one of our drivers has never driven on snow. It was just too risky and the safety of the scouts just too important to us.

Report from Snow Valley at 8 this morning was that the lifts were frozen and they were trying to get them operaitonal. San Bernardino road crews reported a 2 hour trip for just 10 miles on HWY 38 and that's the easy way up! I can't imagine what the crawl up the 330 would have been like. 10 degrees up there too! Weather I can handle with a one piece ski suit, but I doubt most of our boys could have handled weather like that.

We're going to try again next weekend. Snow Valley can take our large group and the lodge we rent only has a small scout troop of 6 staying there so the owner is going to see it they wouldn't mind us crashing with them for the wekend. We routinely sleep 35 in this lodge...most of the boys on the floor. Dad's get the beds!

I know there's another storm predicted for Tues/Wed. next week and perhaps more next weekend too, so we'll just see.

I was wondering if you ended up going. We had thought about trying to sneak up there today, but the roads are still closed. So we're sticking with the Idyllwild area. Doesn't look like the roads are so bad. Heck, they're still open. Looks like its still R2 conditions.

I bet you'll be good to go next weekend. They should have everything cleared by Friday even if they get a lot of snow.

Well - lodge is not available next weekend. Other troop opened it up to familes also. We'll try a day trip on the 6th. Best we can do coordinating schedules of 35 people!

Well it didn't snow at my house but it sure did at my cabin in the Laguna Mountains, over 18" worth and deeper in the drifts. I decided to take my boys up for some fun in the snow and invited my brother and his family as well. I felt pretty comfortable about not having trouble getting back there with having the cruiser and all but was a little worried about my brother. He does have 4 wheel drive, a jeep grand cherokee, but its not a landcruiser. What normally takes me an hour took me 3 1/2 hours to get there, what a challenge. The CHP let me pass without chains which was surprising. Everyone else had to. All was good until we entered the Laguna Campground which had not been plowed. Even locked front and rear I got stuck. I thought I would have to resort to chains but decided to air way down first, to 12lbs. Worked like a charm as I made it all the way to my cabin, my brother was not so lucky. I decided that to pull him out I would have to mount my chains so I did and backed all the way up to where he was stuck. It took a few trys but we both finally made it. Thank God for the landcruiser, it definitely made the difference for a fun snowy weekend at the cabin. Here are a few pics:

VC - nice pics!!! Glad you got up there!

Dave - hindsight says we made a very good decision to stay put down here. Our golf course superintendent has a rain guage out on the course. According to his blog the course officially received 7" in the past week!

Definitely the smart move. According to the news reports it was a zoo trying to get up there today. Sounds like most people got turned back.

We rolled up to Idyllwild and took 243 all the way over to Banning. 243 was pretty clear. But most of the secondary roads off of it didn't look like they had been touched by a plow. This was the first time for my 3 and 4 year sons to play in the snow so I didn't bother venturing far off 243. It was nice up there. We left out early. Didn't see many people at all up above Idyllwild. Most stopped as soon as they saw snow at around 3000 ft. It was pretty up there. We found a little creek for the boys to play near. I'm pretty new to the Cruiser club. I didn't even think to take a pic of the rig in the snow. :o
