congrats! enjoy your new 80!

Want to sell your m101 next may when I have to go to school?

yeah, hope it's half as reliable as that beat down old 70 was...still a little leery of these gold plated hdt's and all the other bells and whistles...kinda flies in the face of the kisS principle...(last S being capitalized for obvious reasons...)

But, I did a welfare oil change last night ( no filter, just to give it a flush, I'll do a proper one very soon, maybe beb time. )and changed the atf.

I plan to stop by Johan's tomorrow and grab a timing belt, and talk about the beb thing...this one had them done at 90k, it's now at 177...may not need em, but, I don't want to be thinking about those ******* things.

As for the m101...it aint yer usual m101...fj45 full floater, cruiser lift springs, tailgate, ghetto 1930's humphrey bogart yachting canvas lid and some sorta Abel/movie star rack on it... :hillbilly:

and s***....I don't even have a pintle hitch at the moment.

Yur funny dude, those engines may be a little more new age but generally as reliable as the 3b.

Change out t belts and beat the crap out of it and all is good....If ACLs were installed do not worry about the BEBs..

Only thing, injectors seem to go south sooner than the old iron and need replacing when excessive smoke comes out the tail pipe.

Rob

haha, yeah, I know they're pretty good, I'm just still in the " hope all this s*** works" stage of truck ownership, after a while I'll start trusting it a bit more...

and hey , don't knock it, first couple weeks it's like a relationship with a chick, taking her out for dinner, maybe flowers, being nice.....takes a while to get to the sitting on the couch and hollering for her to bring more beer and a sammich stage...:hillbilly:

But that's the thing, he used toyota bearings...

the bearings were 15 years newer than the originals(which I got with the truck, and they were fine, no delam or anything)

so one would hope there'd be some improvements in quality, but...I don't want to be thinking about them when I'm going up the kokamahalo.

So, stopped by john's and picked up a tbelt, some acl's and bolts... think I'll start with the tbelt, then gather my energies for the bearings next week...

it's gonna suck...any of you experts who've done it a few times wanna sit and drink my beer and watch me get oil dripped on my face while I do it?

I've got a road trip coming, on the labour day weekend , so planning to get all this s*** done before then.

And tomorrow it's some costco batteries...mainly because I hate argueing with the dipshits at crappy tire about fitment codes....my 70 had batts that allegedly were supposed to be in some sorta ford, so they got dinkish about the warranty...(even tho, one of the batteries was a 3 hour old DOA.)

Do yourself a favour and get/make a proper tool for cutting the oil pan gasket. Think 2 inch putty knife, last 1/2 inch bent at 90 degrees... except stronger steel so it's not flexible. Or do what I did, and get a putty knife on the end of a steel tube, take off your front wheels, stick the tube in between the frame, and hit it with a sledge hammer to break the seal.

Also remove as many bits and pieces as you can to get a clear path for putting the oil pan back on. No fun wiggling it around trying not to touch your wet sealant.

And tomorrow it's some costco batteries...

Did you ask John about batteries? I just bought some nice glass-mat NAPA batteries from him. If you buy a 20" battery wire from Lordco with an eyelet on one end and a battery post connector on the other end, you don't need a reverse terminal battery on your passenger side. Makes life much nicer when you're shopping for batteries.......

I too was at Radd today.... A shame it wasn't at the same time. Would have liked to see the 80. I grabbed a fan clutch that should help my "B" stay a bit cooler.

Anyway.... Few years ago I grabbed two Optima red tops from old Costco. I abused them for three years swapping them in and out of various different pieces of junk while up north. They survived three Yukon winters and lots of frozen, forced deep cycling and when they finally died I brought them back to Costco and got my $$ back. I strolled back to the batterie isle and got two more, the till lady then picked out the stickers (for that day's date) and it all started over again.

Kinda abusing the system but Costco aint hurtin any... chalk one up for the little guys.

Yeah, my costco experiences are about the same...had one set where the girl forgot to punch out the numbers when I bought them...that worked out rather well...:D

mind you, from my sketchy bj40 wiring harness days, I burned through 3 sets of batts on one crappy tire warranty.

so big money grubbing box stores ain't all bad, long as you aren't in the third world country where they're knocking this s*** together with the tears of small children

as for the oil pan, I have a plethora of oddball chisels and catspaws...it's only been on there 5 years , last op I took off was from a 3b, sealed for nigh on 30 years... some steel wedges go a long way too.

but yeah, it's gonna suck, I'm resigned to that...:meh:

Hit the FPIG that surrounds the pan with the torch for a few moments and the pan will come down easily.

Be VERY careful with the oil level sensor - it's fragile and can hit the oil pick up when the pan is coming down. Might be a good idea to remove it first. It comes out on a slight angle more easily once you get the bolts out.

I have some Auber gauges here - have yet to install them. I am now looking at the South African Madman gauges (my mother travels back and forth to South Africa regularly - might be able to bring some samples home).

BEBs are easy. Seem scary but there not. Couple of tiny wedges and an exacto.
I like the torch idea though:)

As for your M101 it can just sit there until May when I come and pick it up with my PINTLE. That is if I find a rig by then.....

I ditched the 81 for simplicity. I don't need a jello shooter console even though it was nice. I like the ruggedness. I was also scare of electrical stuff that could potentially go haywire down the road. Too many gizmos.

I miss mine in many ways though. She was a peach to me.

yep, there is a retarded number of gizmo's, no question about that. Kinda freak me out too, but for what I paid, I figger I can give the 80 thing and the RHD thing a try without worrying too much about losing money.

not overly worried about doing the beb's, it's all just dirty lego.

as for the m101, ask me again in may, see if I still have it and whether it's getting used. Not really interested in selling at the moment.

Anyways back to regular programming,:p first road trip to nitinat went rather well...nice being able to do 60 on those roads and still carry on a conversation..

Course it was absolutely crazy busy at the lake, ( seriously , no parking anywhere...reminds me why I tended to avoid that place in august..)and not windy, so we just carried on up to china creek, port alberni, and back home.

First modification to the 80? Hack the front and rear parts of the "basket" rack off so the thing doens't howl like a banshee, and boards etc can sit on the flat deck, makes them fit on there a bit better...

And funny, I was going to get rid of the Bike Rack on the back, but turns out it's actually usefull...And just cuz I was already outside taking pics of s*** ....at least it's dusty now, and got it's first dose of black and white dog hair...

Now between finishing off my deck cover for the inspection on friday, it's tbelt time.

and, things that make you go hmmmm....

( spare belts in the box o' extra crap I got with the truck)

did you order up a bunch of these at some point steve?

just curious, made me chuckle inbetween skinning my knuckles and generally swearing at the fact it was 38 degrees in my driveway as I changed out the tbelt...

That's what happens when you go to Nitinat during "Windfest 2010" and there is everyone from the island and the mainland plus their dogs at the lake, infact I avoided it all together and tried to stick to the local waters, of course there needs to be wind to sail the local waters:p

We will probably cross each other on the way to Nitinat one day, great ride you got.

Cheers J.

cool!

yup, met the PO a few years ago in the parking lot at Langford Home Depot; he was from Ladysmith area I think - can't remember his name

we chatted, and he joined in on a parts order I placed with cruiserdan - I hope the fuel and air filters found their way into the Cruiser

Yeah, realized there was some sorta windfest/yuppie fest/naked eastern european(there's always one.) thing going on the night before, and I already had all the s*** packed, so figgered, f'it , going anyways...

We basically did a lap of the parking lot, saw there wasn't any wind, ( and kinda hoped it didn't come up, just to screw those yuppie mainlanders over...:hillbilly:)
and buggered off to alberni.

and steve, yeah he used to live in chemainus I think, was up in qualicum when I got the truck, now he's moving to hawaii....I forget his name too...Brian something...

I assume the other parts made it in, but that was a while ago now. I'm going to do a bunch more stuff before my road trip. I'd like to do a rear storage thing ala the morb, but may not have time...may have to go with the ghetto version...like I wouldn't anyways...:hillbilly:

well, that kinda sucked...

did the beb's today. Had my plastic face shield on for most of it, but I still feel like one of those ducks that BP befriended in the gulf.

Anyways, as I expected/hoped, the bearings were fine. But you don't know till you take it apart...

Next is to ditch that acsd whizjammer and a valve adjustment, then I can go back to ignoring things for a few months.

Rather looking forward to that....

Next is to ditch that acsd whizjammer

let me know what size coolant hose you get to bypass that whizjammer thingie - Jeremy made me a plate to stop the fuel leak where the acsd used to be, but it's still connected to the coolant lines

thanks, -Steve

Man you go through cruisers! Nice upgrade. Is that thing a -T or -FT?

Your old aluminum tub is finally going on and giving a BJ42 new life. Build is on CC forums.

Cheers!

haha, cool, I wondered how that old thing was going!

I don't go through that many, had that bj70 for 6 years...and the 40 for about ten by the time I turned it into a 45 and sold it. Not sure how long this 80 thing will last, but for the moment, it's kinda nice rolling in some comfort.

Never mind the hearing loss I've probably given myself with all the screaming 3b's I've been sitting behind all these years...

I always seem to fix the annoying things and get a truck the way I like it , just before i sell the damn thing...:bang:

it's a hdt. ft was newer I think?

and steve, pretty sure it's just 3/8". the acsd isn't leaking or anything, I just read a few accounts of how unpleasant it's demise would be, and figger I'd spare myself that.
