ISO Cargo Lifts

I'm a rock hound and would like to rig up something to lift heavy loads (up to 400 lbs) into the back of my 40. It seems like making something that mounts to the roll cage could work. Maybe on a track that extends out the back to pick up the load and then slide it in and drop it in the back.

Thoughts?

I think a ramp (bifold) or 2 piece with say a small dc electric winch ATV size would work nicely with some small wheeled cart/box that fits the ramp. Assemble ramp 2 - 4' sections, winch up cart, store a section of ramp on each side of box.

Ohhh... I like that idea! I could use one or both ramps from the flatbed trailer that I use to haul the truck to the dig!

So went out and measured. Ramp section could be 42" long. Ground to floor deck is 25"
I think the angle is like 18 degrees if the height is 25" and the hypotenuse 84"
A ramp 16" wide with 2" sides to keep cart/box on track would be stable enough. You need to draw it out to ensure box/cart can transition from ramp to the bed without bottoming out.

Hmm... not sure how that would work with a hard top though.

May be old school but maybe your best option is to transfer whatever is outside the vehicle to containers inside the vehicle. Most likely slower but won't require any additional storage space.

I wasn't clear, sorry about that... I'm talking about a single rock that weighs upwards of 400 lbs.

Way back in the mid 70's I spent a few days with Gary Pickett? when he was giving lessons/classes out of Lowman Id. I think I have a few chunks from Obsidian Id. I have done arrow heads and a few chert/flint/agate for flintlocks.

If you fab an offset hitch and cut this down to be lower than your roof you could make this work.

I like this idea. Hauled a few big rocks, a wood stove and even a washing machine in my FJ40LV and something like this would have definitely helped.

I've been eyeballing these too... just need to make it swivel such that the load goes in the back.

I'll be there starting the 14th or 15th through the 22nd. There will be a whole lot of other folks there as well. Look for "knapper camp" on google maps. Dry camping but lots of camp sites up and down the road.

If you modified the stinger that goes into the hitch to shoot 90deg to the side and get it tucked close to the door hinge it should be doable. It would be a fun project. And it’s pretty cheap. And requires no truck side modifications.

Yes... that is what I was thinking. Wouldn't be hard to make one from scratch.

I’ve used a folding wheelchair ramp and moving dollies to load heavy stuff up into my trailer. If you mount a small winch to the roll bar you could probably winch it uo pretty easily
