Is This Shaft Toast?

Doing a C & T so I decided to rebuild the knuckles. This is what my long side looks like. Is it safe to run it?

Shafts are cheap. Looks like it would make a decent trail spare.

Like he said, shafts are cheap. But if you don't figure out WTF caused that, you might be in for the same...or worse.

I'm guessing a busticated Birfield did it in.

I was gonna suggest that a brokenafued one was the cause, or maybe a smithereenified one but you might be right.

Thanks for the replies. I found this while rebuilding the Birfield. The Birfield, race, cage and balls all look fine. What else needs to be checked?

As aside, I have never driven this truck. I got it as a project and I am still putting it together.

it may have been caused by a past busted birf and the PO/shop reused the shaft

Were you using Aisin hubs on a 75-78 front end with the longer birfields?

I am using Aisin hubs. But I cannot say for sure about the rest. My 40 is a 71. and the knuckles have been clearanced to fit the larger knuckles and disk brakes. Mini truck swap is possible?
