Is a tach necessary? (1 Viewer)

Go to the junkyard and get some VDO gauges from a 80's VW.

High quality and you get to explain what a "Bar" is to people..

The tach is just a little off in a LC

What do you mean by this?

Most VWs didn't come with six cylinder engines. Most of us have 6s or 8s in our cruisers. A tach set up for a 4 cylinder will be off and stock tacks are typically not adjustable.

Aaaaaah.... Was sure what you were referring to with that comment.

Got it now.

went with the VDO series 1 gauges, and I also sprung for the tach.:p
Just think it'd be nice to have. Had some summit bucks and also a big return, so 246 bucks out the door with all the senders and crap although they didnt have the fuel level sender in stock, so theyre gonnna have to ship that one out.

I've had Glow Shift gauges in my diesel pickup for about a year now. I added five gauges and they are all working good except for the fuel pressure gauge. I just found out that it maybe should of had a snubber in line before the sending unit. It also has done some screwy things with the color shift. But, overall I'm satisfied with what is maybe not as good a quality product as something like Autometer, but much more affordable.

Yea I didnt put a snubber in my FP sending unit line for my 24V CTD and it destroyed the sending unit internally and eventually started it leaking all over the damn place. lesson learned.

As I understand it the snubber smooths out pulses before getting to the sending unit. Where do I get a snubber, and is it something I can make easily and cheaper than buying?

I have a Autometer 5" recall tach in the buggy.. because it was there when I bought it back in 2001. I never, ever, ever *NEED* to look at it, that's for sure. One of these days I'll put it in the TransAm, since the factory tach can't keep up (in 2nd, it shows 6100 when I hit the limiter at 7000)

I like having voltage, water temp, (and trans temp for an auto) though. A dummy light set at 12v would suffice instead of a gauge though.

Somehow a dash just doesn't seem complete without a compliment of gauges in it. Must be my aviation background.

That is exactly correct. I say make your own, so instead of it having a 1/8" hole for fuel to flow and pulse through you "snub" it down with either some reducers or my favorite way a needle valve / small ball valve that you can close off then open back up just enough to let pressure through for your gauge to read the pressure but the pulses be dampened by the small orifice opening.

Like I said I didnt have one on mine and the sending unit was an easy 2 foot away from where it picked up pressure and the pulses still destroyed it over time. my other fuel sending unit was rattled to death after being mounted to the block. I read not to do it these ways tried it anyhow and they both eventually failed. first one then the other (had 2 units, one for programmer and one for pillar mount.)
