Introducing my 98 4Runner DD.

Looks like a nice build. You should bring it out to the Upstate Cruisers OTMT ride August 16-18 at Golden Mountain Park. I will be there in our 4runner.

Thanks. Man, I would like to, but I am not sure it is gonna be trail worthy by then. I will probably bring my 80, but who knows. Gonna depend on how much I can get done in the next two weeks. I am looking forward to OTMT in a couple weeks, look forward to meeting some folks and putting some faces with the forum handles. I read thru your build thread and your Runner is very nice indeed. Look forward to seeing it.

My Wheelers studs arrived today and I picked up my toytec spacers from Jason last week. Painted bumper last Saturday, so I think I am going to try to disassemble my CO's to install the studs and then I can work on cutting the frame ends off and installing the mounts this weekend, that is if I can squeeze it in between raindrops, a bathroom remodel and seeing Planes with little bit. :)

Sounds like a busy week, looking forward to you getting it together.

Shrockworks = Donkey Balls

I was hoping that I would be posting up some awesome pictures of my dry fitted bumper tonight, you know since I spent about 6 hours cutting and grinding and drilling and getting everything ready to dry fit my bumper tonight....

Instead I spent about 3 hours fighting with a bumper that WOULD NOT even begin to slide into the mounts. :bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang:

You know how a hard day of wrenching just drains you physically, but it doesn't seem so bad because you got some awesome new widget bolted up, well take all the aches and pains only add in somebody running over your dog with you watching and not stopping to tell you. That is about where I am right now.

I followed the instructions that came with it to the letter, re-read them multiple times, bolted and un-bolted, hammered, cut, ground, hammered, tightened, loosened.... and after over 5 hours of work I ended up bolting my factory bumper back on, hooking everything back up and finishing up exactly where I started 6 hours earlier. Only now I have cut several things off and I scuffed up the paint, so now not only does the bumper not fit, but I am going to have to order more paint, sand and rework some areas on the bumper before I get the final assembly done.

I have pictures, but they are really irrelevant since they don't really mean anything since the bumper isn't mounted....

Oh and T4R sucks ***. I took some time to type of a new thread post over there to ask if anyone had any advice only to get dumped with "The server is too busy, try again later" Pay for some more G**D** server space so you can have a half way decent forum. I have gotten that several times lately and after the day I have had, it was just that "straw" tonight. Sorry for the mini-rant, but sometimes you just need to vent.

Any advice is welcome. I may try again tomorrow, using the instructions to wipe my *** with and just trying to figure out how to get it bolted on. Once I know how to get the b*st**d on then I will worry about fixing the paint.

:meh:

Bigger hammer?

What exactly is not fitting? Mounts don't line up or what?

The mounts on the bumper are too wide. The brackets that mount to the frame are not wide enough to accept the bumper. I am sure that I can get it on, I just don't feel like it should be so dang difficult.
Next attempt I am going to leave the frame brackets loose and try to wedge it in. I read somewhere where a guy had to grease his in order to get it to fit. The only other option I see is to bolt the frame brackets onto the bumper and then try to work the whole assembly onto the front of the truck.

I am going to call SW tomorrow to discuss the issues to see if they can offer any ideas. I guess after spending nearly a grand and waiting over 4 months, I didn't expect to have this type of serious fitment issues....

I had similar issues with my ARB. The frame brackets were 1/2 wider than the bumper brackets. Ended up with a crazy contraption of rachet straps and it slid on. It wasn't ARBs fault, I may have bent everything myself...

Thanks again guys. I will keep you up to date on how round 2 goes.

Good luck man! That's tough with a "bolt on" bumper... you'd think that the dimensions would be consistent enough to make it fit.

Ok, so I now know that I am going to have to get a different set of spring compressors to break down my 99 talls to install the longer wheeler studs, so if I am going to end up doing that, I am curious if I were to order a set of 5100's for a Tacoma and then put the 99 Tall coils and then top them off with the 4Runner top plates how that would turn out. In theory that would give me the improved ride equality of the 5100 with the taller coils and the ability to put the top plate spacers on.

From what I read, the Tacoma 5100's will work on the 4Runner provided that you use the 4Runner top plate. Is this correct?

Thanks,

You are correct sir, actually that is a very common setup. Good luck.

Well I was gonna take another whack at it this weekend, but I now have a disabled samurai in the driveway that needs some attention. May try to fiddle with it again later today.

FYI, I've heard that Tacoma 5100s are underdamped for a 4runner so people run the Tundra 5100s. However... the Tundra 5100s are longer than 4runner shocks, which gives some lift even at the lowest perch notch. Something to consider.

My 5100 seem to be working great, but I am running a heavy spring.

Nah, actually two things, 1. I just haven't had a chance to add it, and 2. (And most important) my signature has been limited to 5 lines. So your quote is gonna have to go :p

Bumper headache

Any resolution to the Shrockworks bumper? I've been eyeing one of those for quite some time but your troubles are giving me second thoughts. Hope it has worked out for you.

Well, I haven't had time to try it again lately. I have been rebuilding a samurai for the wife, which has been occupying pretty much every free minute.

I intend to try again, but leave all the bolts loose t see if that helps it along. I wil definitely post up when I give it another go.
