scouring mud

A customer just sent me this thread. I rarely have time to even look at mud. I don't scour these forums for tidbits like some of the cruiser junkies. I also don't put everything I build on my web site.

I build lots of custom stuff, most of which does not make it here on mud. The original rack parts I made for James happened to turn out to be a nice little product. There are hundreds of product worthy parts I've built but no R&D time to make them worthy pieces for production.

The brackets for these cargo racks took a good solid week of R&D to develop. This is a very simple looking product but the fixtures, tooling and CAD takes endless hours of refinement. Thinking about it takes twice the actual time on the bench and computer.

It is very tough to find a week long chunk of time to develop anything. It was pretty slow for a couple months at the end of last summer so I took that time to develop some stuff. These racks were one thing that got some time on the drawing board because a few customers wanted them and were willing to pay for them up front. Now I have the parts to build them on the shelf and they go together pretty quickly. They are worth making now that the R&D has been done.

If I had a real job like Ken Hanna and James I would never have enough time to make other people stuff or do full on product development.

Now I have time in the evenings to surf around a bit so maybe I'll keep my finger on the pulse a little more.

This is most I've ever posted on mud.

There is a large interest in these and as soon as a price is posted I assume the list will be narrowed down and people would be willing to send in funds up front. Is James taking charge and selling the product or is it all on Luke now? Either way it sounds like people are starting to get these and a bunch of us are waiting as well.

Will these work with a Milford cargo barrier or do they go all the way up close to touching the second row seats?

To clear up some confusion, FirstToy AKA JAMES is making the list on this thread not 4X4 labs. JAMES started this thread about the interiour can rack that JAMES designed and built from parts he requested 4X4 labs to make. 4X4 labs making their own version of JAMES's rack is news to JAMES and I.

I think JAMES came up with a great idea to mount the water cans over the waisted space ontop of the fender well in the rear of the 80s cargo area. JAMES came to Hanna Quality to take his idea further since so many other 80 owners have asked him for a set of racks for their 80s. So many good ideas come from the end user like JAMES and others here on MUD. The delay on getting this new product to market has obviously left a hole were others want to fill.

We will release the official cost of the Hanna Quality interiour can racks by the 17th of April.

I'm not involved in this production effort. It's all James and Ken I guess.
I was just replying to the vaporware comment. I'm interested in how these things are going to work out with the rest of the cargo drawer system.

the final design utilizes the factory seat braket over the fender well and 2 holes per side on the floor.

one shows the "bottom plate" that goes to the holes for the 3rd row seats on the floor 2 per side.

the other pic shows the how "bottom plate" would be hidden under the floor carpet.

Can you take a measurement between the back of the second row seats and the basket? I just want to make sure I can fit these in with my cargo barrier. The barrier is only off of the seat about an inch.

after quite a few ways of mounting the rack were thrown around we came up with not so simple to make however very simple to work upper mounts that are right under the rack and connect to the factory seat bracket located on the fender well. The blue part is a simulation of the factory seat bracket on the fender well. The rack will slide on just like the 3rd row seats and lock in with the 2 bolts on the floor.

The design was made to be strong and incredibly simple to install and remove

Looking awesome Ken.
Should I have you delay shipping my sliders so we can combine shipping?

Possible interest.

How far does the "floor plate" stick out from the edge of the wheel wells? I've got stuff bolted to the floor back there that I don't want to move:grinpimp: The original design that is up off the floor would workie better for me.

Very nice work

Thanks

the "floor plate" ends at the first bolt used to hold the 3rd row set mount on the floor closest to its fender well about 11.5 inches from the fender well.

The rack will be about 2 inches from the rear of the seat and the water cans in the rack will be about an inch from the rear of the seat closest at the head rest. There might be a little more room than that since the cans have room to move forward a back a bit depending on what water cans are used.

One pair please!
Please let me know the details on sendig deposit $$$

I am in for a pair.
I answered your PM.
I will also figure out the best size ammo cans to fit in there. I am thinking the mark-19 grenade machine gun cans are a perfect match. I wont know for sure till I measure them. They are nice and tall and would be great for storage. I will start measuring some of the ammo cans around here.

Ya, a bit more than expected but I doubt I will be disappointed with the quality. I need some storage up above with the stuff I carry. PM me details or whatever is needed to get this rolling.

this is a very good price. the amount of precision design and finish of the product will make every owner proud.
Hanna literally designed these down to the bolt-size, every bend and flared hole and bracket is custom. Ken's fabricating, manufacturing and 3d modelling design experience allowed this to come in at a very reasonable cost with little compromise.

There are mulitple features to our design that are big improvements from experience with my prototype. Due to the mounting design and materials process, I believe these are actually lighter than the proto, while being far stronger.

we have always had a grand scheme for this, so there are more features to come. The cargo carriers are a foundation product, gateway to more (if one wishes).

I recommend people buy them in pairs, b/c it allows much more flexibility and limited only by the customers imagination. My bet that you will want the second soon enough, if not now.

I'm so proud of my experience with Ken Hanna. From his dedication to quality design and integrity as a person.
