InfiniApps Slyde Magnetic Phone Mount - DO SOMETHING WITH THAT USELESS STORAGE POCKET

1. Order the InfiniApps Slyde CD Slot Phone Mount. $25 from Amazon
2. Remove the 4 screws to access the rubber-coated steel plate that ordinarily goes into your car's CD slot. Use a Dremel to cut a bit off both ends so that it will fit into the Useless Storage Pocket

3. Here it is, reassembled. In the upper-right corner of the pic, you can see one of the tabs that I cut off.

4. Find some strong material to fill the excess space in the pocket. I sacrificed part of my hitch-mount bike rack's 1-1/4"-to-2" adapter sleeve

5. The OEM set screw is unacceptably large and clunky. Go to Ace and buy a 16mm M6 screw instead

Put everything together and fit it in. I put the Slyde on top, then used some double-stick padded tape to keep the shim attached, and finally I also used a scrap of one of those non-skid rubber mats that keeps your cellphone from sliding across your dashboard.

In this pic, you can see that the M6 screw from Ace looks very clean

Performance
This setup is terrific. The phone doesn't block any of the existing gauges (not even the clock). It's very stable and doesn't vibrate when driving. The Slyde kit comes with two wafer-thin metal plates that you put in between the back of your phone and its case. I use a very low-profile case for my iPhone 5, and the plate fits without any problems. You can view your phone in portrait, landscape, or anything in between; it's very cool - it looks like your phone is levitating.

Lastly: I'll be replacing the OEM stereo with a new double-DIN unit (Sony WX-GT80UI, chosen primarily because it looks like it will match the original dashboard very closely). Since my new head unit will have a USB jack built it, I should be able to run a very short pigtail USB-to-lightning cable between the HU and my phone.

Cool idea. Do you think it is strong enough to hold a 7" lcd monitor?

I am copying an idea from a local member that added front and back video cameras for sight lines when offroading. I want to mount the monitor somewhere that is out of the way, and I can easily remove it for safe storage.

I don't think so. It is plenty strong for a phone, but I wouldn't use it for either my Kindle Fire or my iPad Mini.

You should search on Amazon for "iMagnet Cradle-less Magnetic Tablet Mount". 40 bucks and looks like it can stay attached to the dash or windshield.

I like this. Sometimes I cringe when I read interior mod threads. Not this time. Well done, your project turned out very nice! Functional, yet has form worthy of the 80 series. Now... if you could go out and flog your truck; jump it a few times, crawl over rocks and tree stumps, drop it of a 4' ledge. I want to know if that magnet thingy is strong enough to keep the phone in place on the trail. If not, I might go with a similar set up with a more solid cradle.

I think some interior mods suck. If there is no other choice I go with function over form, but from my perspective sometimes the utility of what some guys do is not worth the the displeasure of looking at it... IMHO

I can't perform a wheeling test for you, but I will say that the mount is VERY strong if you are pulling the phone in a direction parallel to the magnet surface (shear forces). If you tip the phone away from the magnet, then it releases very easily. So if you think that your offroad activities will cause the phone to make jerky tipping motions, then it may release your phone. If, however, you think the strongest motions will be primarily up/down, then the mount should be strong.
