Thanks, folks!

I’m not expecting great news since it puked 100% of its oil on the trail. There’s a chance that the cure for a hydrolocked engine will do the trick and a chance that the engine is down for the count.

I just hope the dealership reads my “do not crank” sticky note on the steering wheel.

While this is the most catastrophic issue we’ve experienced with any vehicle, it is far from the most serious in the grand scheme of things.

I will say this: move a snorkel up on your priority list if even mellow water crossings are in your future. Otherwise, you may get to experience the view shown below.

Sorry to hear about this. I hope it can be resolved. Water crossing with stock air intake is a serious issue. How deep was the water.

18-24 inches but we definitely dunked the passenger side into a hole... it’s almost like someone had gotten stuck there and dug out a little trench. For reference, @Mendocino and @mcgaskins made it through without issue along with tens of other vehicles throughout the day. I’m guessing it was a combination of bad luck and a bad line through the water.

was the oil mixed with water when it puked out?

did you see water in the air box?

if it continued to run enough to get you through the crossing, it doesn't sound like hydrolocked.
will be interesting to see where the oil is coming from. any chance the oil cooler got hit with cold water and cracked/ contracted and blew a seal.

We were about 3/4 the way through when we started to lose power and the truck shut down and stopped moving 20-30 feet past the crossing.

There was definitely water mixed in with the oil and the air box was saturated.

Matt also thought that the cold water may have caused a crack...

Sorry to hear this Cole, hoping for good news on the motor man

Glad you guys are ok. Heartbreaking

Damn. Sorry to hear about the engine problem.

Didn’t we have another 200 with a bad result from a water crossing? Maybe a couple years ago? (I need to search.)

Sorry to hear this Cole!

Hate to hear this cole. Not cool
Good Luck moving forward

Sorry to hear Cole. You’ve got a good attitude about it but it’s still makes for a bad experience overall.

I expect to have more to report regarding the extent of the damage by the second half of this week. Thanks for all the kind words.

On a completely different subject, the custom second-row water tank was delivered on a pallet from Tek-Tanks while I was away. There's not much I can do with it yet, but I'm fairly confident that it's going to work very, very well. It's basically a taller version of the popular floorboard Frontrunner tank. The total capacity is 20 gallons. More importantly, though, is that all 20 gallons should be usable with this design with the vent on top and a pickup for the outlet. For comparison, my 14 gallon RV tank only has about 8-9 usable gallons due to the vent and outlet locations (crazy, huh?).

@indycole, I'm so sorry that a great trip ended this way! We had a great time getting to know you and Bethany. Your flexibility on our modified Kokopelli's Trail was greatly appreciated. If you need a local advocate on the ground to help with your truck feel free to email me.

@indycole Sorry to hear this Cole, keepin my fingers crossed for some good news on the repair! I like your positive attitude and one way or the other I know you'll have that truck fixed and back out exploring and hitting trails and living life!

This is a very encouraging post. I’m hoping for a good outcome on this situation.

Man, now you’ve got me going out to measure what 350mm looks like when my kids legs are dangling from their car seats.

Care you share what we can expect to pay for one of those tanks?

The project cost a total of $1000. That includes roughly $250 in a pallet + shipping, $100 in fittings and small parts, and about $650 for the tank. If you didn't catch it earlier in the thread, it's a custom tank from Tek-Tanks in the UK. The construction/fabrication is pretty darn impressive and the tank itself is baffled to cut down on sloshing (which has been a problem with the current two tanks).
