Bosch filters are being made in countries where quality is not in their vocabulary. I've seen Bosch made in Tunisia , Israel , Taiwan ect, interesting I have never seen one from Germany or UK?

Purolator have a good name with me but, until recently so did Bosch.

Bosch, like Purolator, have several lines of filters to choose from. Some are good, some not so good. FWIW, I haven't been using the Bosch filter since we switched to their Steeltech line. Before the switch, however, I ran their filters for years without issue. As far as country of origin, cost of manufacturing has forced some to get their product from less than desirable countries, in order to stay competitive. It's unfortunate, but reality.

@Seth_O on another thread posted that the filter in question was a WIX 51348 and not the WIX 51515. The WIX website only lists the 51515 or 51515XP for a 94 model year but lists the 51348 and 51348XP for a 97 model year. In other threads the differences between the two indicate the 51348 as being a 15 micron filter. According to the WIX website they are both 21 micron but the 51348 is smaller, same flow rate, same bypass pressure but with a smaller gasket. The XP versions of each filter do not show the micron spec interestingly enough. My question why the different filter numbers based upon model year?

Correct the filter I used was the 51348, I use it because it is slightly smaller and I have the 90 degree fitting on my block, so it fits better. Never had any problems with them until this particular one.

I don't know the micron rating on it, or why they changed numbers for the same engine across different years. In the other post I also read that they list a different filter for the Lexus vs the Landcruiser, even though the engines are the same.

Motorcraft FL1A Good filter, available just about everywhere, not expensive. Nary a problem running them on my Cruiser for the last 15 yrs. or so.

lol.

Thats the filter for my e150 with 351w.

That's good to know that I can use it for my cruiser too!

Hah, yes.....same filter I use for my '70 Model Bronco and '90 Model Bronco. But can be used in many cases where a thread pitch of 3/4-16 and an outside gasket diameter of roughly 2.800" is called for.

Of course, there are other considerations when choosing ANY filter. Anti-drain back valve, Bypass valve opening pressure, filtration rating/microns, etc....

I gave people a ton of crap for overreacting regarding Wix filters. I took my 51515 off and replaced it with a 90915-YZZD3, and my oil pressure is now back to normal on the stock gauge with less startup rattle.

Definite difference here, and a definite issue. My apologies for being ignorant. WIX needs to sort their crap out.

Not too long ago, I had a deformed WIX air filter that I had to return because it let dirt inside my intake.

Glad I stocked up on these...View attachment 1642938
Over priced dude! A better filter for less money in the large size is a Baldwin b2 hpg. Baldwin doesn’t fool around and besides being industrial grade, this filter has very good stats. You could write Toyota on it if that would make you feel better. :hillbilly:

I do not agree that a company makes a filter and some versions or lines are good and some are not, that's ridiculous.

That's like saying although GM makes 25 different models, some models have brakes and some don't.

I agree there can be manufacturing errors, so one filter out of say 25,000 may have a fault, that's reality, in the same as one vehicle in 100,000 has a faulty brake cylinder.

If I pay extra for a known and respected brand then I expect better odds of not getting a poorly constructed filter, if I go cheap and it comes back and bites my arse then so be it.

I cannot do that with oil filters, I pay (and charge) more for a better filter hoping that I have reduced the chances of a come back.

Way overpriced, but they sure are purdy!

find a box of 10 or whatever online and have them sent to your place. cheaper and you dont have to go out.

Same here! $36 or something shipped for 10 can’t be beat with good piece of mind and they are the same filter my LS430 uses so 1 stone 2 birds!

I think your cruiser required more like 8 quarts. Maybe 6 was a typo.

Mine requires 8 plus an IV bag full of about another quart to make up for the bleeding.

The manufacturers will tell you themselves, that their product lines are different.

Duh, ones red - ones blue - and one is black...different.

Never mind that the first two in the thumbnail look identical inside.

I have NEVER had a filter rep say here is our crappy one and this is our best however, he will say his brand is better because it is fitted with some kind of high tech widget and a quality control system his competitors envy.

In general you get what you pay for............usually, but pay peanuts and you always get monkeys.

So, where do we stand? Purchase a Purolator and hope they did not run out of Black and Blue paint at the factory, cos as sure as eggs are eggs, there will be no stopping the production line of the cheap versions!

I spoke directly to a Fram Rep, and asked why they made their orange filter so crappy. His response, "when people stop buying them, we'll consider making them better".

Of course they, like most others, have a better quality line available, for the customer that wants quality over price.

So, in short, if your Rep (sales person) only feeds you b.s. about how all there products are equally superior, you may want to do some of your own research, before peddling their product.

That thumbnail is also a video, with third party comparison outside of paint color.

I prefer my pictures to be stationary. You keep those new fangled moving pictures out of my sight!!

No research should be necessary, you don't purchase a Rolls Royce and expect Ford quality.

You pay good money and expect a good product, true it does not always follow but is generally the way to go.

Dave, Just as an FYI, i checked the Bosch "Distance Plus" oil filter P/N3500 that i use on my Land Cruiser. Printed right on the filters label it says made in the USA, but then again this is a higher dollar filter, locally costing around 13 bucks each.
