I test drove a Land Cruiser today - first drive in one since 1977 - EDIT: On order (1 Viewer)

There's no argument that the cost of ownership is going to be more for a Land Cruiser, but the biggest factor by far is the difference in price for the vehicle itself (comparing new vs new or used vs used to keep it apples to apples). And I realize that all the little things add up, but if a few hundred bucks for tires every several years is going to bust the budget, then buying a Land Cruiser would probably be a really bad move (and tire prices for a 4Runner will vary a bit depending on which wheels the 4Runner has).

Say it isn't so... :)

Good advice. I'm 67 and we both retired ten years ago. But don't let that fool you; we're not wealthy (highest combined income for both of us was well under six figures), we just saved as much as we could, took on zero debt other than the house, and live pretty frugally. Buying a Land Cruiser would be a huge expense for us.

I'm sitting here with a dealer's order sheet, just waiting for me to commit. It is for a black 2020 HE, with 1300 miles on it (dealer demo; the owner's wife's car) for $81,500 (with tax and fees at $87,303.) My gut is eating me up. That's a used Mazda3 less than what we paid for our house!

I just can't do it... I've wanted one of these things for nearly 50 years. But my four year old 4Runner is more than adequate, paid for, and in great shape with only 35,000 miles. I don't think I would have even been considering this option if not for the fact that after next year I won't be able to buy a new one.

Maybe one of these days I'll snag a used one. Or, maybe not. I think I'll be okay with that. I hope so, anyway.

Thank you all for letting me go all "stream of consciousness" on you here. It's helped; believe me.

Buying a used LC will allow you to add a lot of really nice options.
Purchased my 2013 with 108,000 miles for $34K. It's gotta couple of dings here and there but all and all excellent condition.
Hey if I had $90k fun money I'd run right out and buy a 21 Black HE, just saying.

Where do folks watch for used vehicles other than AutoTrader? Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace are too limiting in area.

I had been tracking CarMax, Carvana, CarGurus, Cars.com, Edmunds, and CarFax listings for several months before I bought my 2018 LC earlier this year. That combination of sites worked out really well.

Also using KBB and their cost of ownership calculator for 2016 LC to TRD Pro 4Runner its $30k to $25k for 15k miles a year just fuel, insurance, maintenance, and repairs.

That's nuts! My total cost of ownership on my 4Runner since new (excluding depreciation, which isn't much) over 34,384 miles is
Fuel: $4985
Ins: $1530
Maint: $653

Total: $7821

That equates to $3412/15k miles, not $25,000 Somebody at KBB is pouring molten money in their fuel and oil filler. Even adding in depreciation would only increase that by another $3500/15k miles (Mine cost $39k new, and middlin' trade-in is $31k) :borg:

Thank you, sir!

For the price of new 200. You could get a 2008-2011 in decent condition AND a used SWEET 2018 LC500 with like 30k miles on it. If you have second thoughts spending the 90k on a new one, don't do it. Not to sound so financial advisor but you're retired and your cash inflows aren't as high as they were pre-retirement.

After much consideration, there will be a black 2021 Land Cruiser Heritage Edition arriving at Ed Martin Toyota in Indianapolis in January with my name on it. Thank you @Eric Sarjeant !!

I retired at age 66 in 2017 and bought a new 2020 HE last November. Previously the wife and I have owned multiple 4Runners, an FJ Cruiser, and both 100/200 series LX/LC machines. The last being a 2017 "base" model LC.

If your experience with the 2021 HE mirrors mine you won't be disappointed in your decision.
