After 9 months of unemployment, finishing my thesis and passing the national exam I am officially a Registered Dietitian.

That having been said, I got offered a position in a corporate nursing home chain and I'll be splitting my time between Playa del Rey and Santa Ana.

Sounds awesome, but where is good to live out this way? Looking at Google maps it seems that Long Beach and the south bay are in the middle of both facilities.

Any recommendations for a good neighbourhood that's not a slum or insanely expensive?

Congrats Matt! You know it's because the Chargers are moving here.;)

Check out Torrance, Lomita or LBC. My vote if for Torrance. You can take the 405 to either spots. The only thing is that the 405 is a bitch of a freeway in between those cities. Lakewood is a good choice too.

Add Cerritos, La Palma and La Mirada to the list.

Chargers plus not living in the IE would be a good year.

Any general areas to avoid in those cities you mentioned?

2x that.....congrats Matt, my :princess: is a RD at college hospital, and splits between cerritos and costa mesa...we are in lakewood.

2nd street looks nice but that close to the ocean looks pricey!

Bitch of a commute regardless. I don't know north OC very well or South LAC. Congrats big time on the position!

Depends on your price range.

LB can be fun, but it can be ghetto real quick. You can pretty much expect street parking. The best parts are by Stadium Marina, Belmont Shores, and off of 2nd.

I go running with a girl that lives out that way. I've seen a lot of for rent signs. The next time I go for a run, I'll take a paper and pen.

Sweet, thanks!

Torrance is a good choice but stay west of Western, or maybe Crenshaw if you can find a good deal there. Also, south of 190th is better but there are a lot of choices near El Camino that aren't too bad.

Lomita has some good places for reasonable but some areas are less desireable but you'll know which ones right away. Lots of character there.

Good luck, Dan.

I have lived in both. Lived on Nieto Avenue in between the ocean and 2nd street (belmont shore). It was my favorite of the two. Lived in North Redondo Beach as well. Redondo was more expensive and not near as fun since I lived a block from the beach in LBC and about 2 miles in Redondo (while paying more). I left CA in 2007, so YMMV.
