I Bought a Chinese Suspension Fork

Rode super-buff, fast trails last night. Only a few technical sections. Functioned flawlessly. At speed, the fork feels really good.

Update of Replacement Issue: The seller says replacement fork will ship after the end of the month. It confirmed that I need not send the problem fork back.

Rather than experiment on the problem fork, I may have it rebuilt as a spare instead. This may be important because the bike feels awkward with the new fork on it. Don't get me wrong, the fork works very well so far and is an amazing value, but the bike doesn't handle like it used to. It's not graceful -- it feels a little chopper-like. I plan to measure at lunch to make sure the fork has the right dimension. If it checks out, then I'll have to look at what's wrong with me and my riding this past week.

is it the same length as the old fork and are the axle mounts in the same spot?

Gonna measure.

Edit: dropout to fork crown is several cm longer than old fork. I also measured the defective fork. It's the same size as the old one. I feel much better: I'm a decent bike handler, but was beginning to wonder . . .

pedal like hell!

where is this?

McAllister Park, believe it or not. It's a maze of trails like that once you get past the soccer fields and play castle things. The flowers are insane out there now too. Wear a book in your pants.

After fine-tuning the sag, the geometry issues have been eliminated. A little RTFM cleared it all up. In fact, today I cleared for the first time ever on any bike the dreaded "waterfall". I'm still experimenting with the rebound control, but it's going to end up pretty close to where it is now -- about half way between slowest and fastest rebound. Rebounding at a medium pace.

I've done about 4 hours (2 rides) since getting all of that sorted out. Impressions so far: this fork works. It doesn't turn baseballs into fresh-laid asphalt, but no fork would do that. With my present rebound settings, it damn near eliminates the trail component of faster trails -- i.e. those where you only deal with small roots and embeds and stones up to golfball-size.

It's impossible to address longevity, but about 1/3 of my rides will be on pretty punishing terrain. So we shall see.

Regarding the warranty issue on the defective fork: the new fork is in the mail according to the seller. The defect fork is in a brown truck headed for Spinner's authorized service rep for a rebuild. It'll be my spare, or I'll sell it for lunch money. Whatever.

NEWS FLASH!

Rockshocks, Marzocchi, and Fox ALL build their suspension forks in Taiwan!

Nothing wrong with buying a taiwanese made product just so long as the company you'r ebuying it from passes the savings on to you.

Nothing bugs me more than a bike company that bills itself (and its products))as a premium bike that makes all of their stuff in Taiwan. *cough*specialized*coughs*

Yeah, this mfgr made (may still make) Rockshox's whole line.

Big wreck yesterday. Remember that dreaded waterfall? I didn't clear it last night. I fell through the air all the way to the bottom (~10' maybe) and landed kind of sitting up. My left butt-cheek hurts like all hell. I think it would hurt even worse right now if I hadn't ridden another hour or so afterwards -- it never stiffened-up.

Fork did great. My Fox rear shock, however, was making an annoying little chirp until I wiped the dust off the shaft.

ouch.

nice to hear the shock is holding up anyway

is it better to take air or try to stay with the bike in that situation? i was taking a new steep downhill trail the other day and it transitioned into deep sand unexpectedly and i stopped short and almost endo'd. i stopped myself by moving forward over the top tube and putting my feet down but the bike kept going and my bike seat tried to rape me. it hurt really bad for about 60 seconds and it took all my self control not to crap myself for the next five minutes or so.

When we rode porcupine rim in MOAB, my buddy did that... Cept, the seat hooked his ball sack and drew blood. He cried and laughed as he used some mirror lens glasses to examine himself. makes a great story to get a chick to hook up with him out of pity.

Is McAllister Park near the airport? I think I've ridden that one years ago and thought it was pretty cool. Do you ever make it to Austin?

That made me snort. Glad you're OK, but it would've added to the story if you hadn't been able to hold your poo. lol. And with a stop/wreck like that, look for a funny circular bruise somewhere on your upper torso in the next few days. You might even be able to read "Chris King" on it.

My wreck: I had no control or choice about where I was going. Problem was, I was on the climbing bars and couldn't reach the brakes to lock up when my rear wheel broke traction near the top. And my friends tell me it was only a 6-7 foot drop. But if I had to guess based on the size of my ass contusion, I'd say it was about 30'.

hit the trail today with the boy. 12 miles and he hung in there pretty good

Spinner sent the new fork. Packaging was much better. When the original defect fork comes back from the rebuilder, I'll have a spare.

All looks good. But not as good as the terrain semlin rides in. Enjoy the time with your boy. I wish mine liked something -- anything -- that I do. lol.

he enjoys riding and feels good about it afterwards, but still bitches and moans about going for rides with me beforehand. he bails out of about 50% of our bikes ride "dates" somehow.

i got the daughter a new used bike yesterday while i was in the city. rocky mountain soul 24" wheel. first ad listed on craigslist when i logged on and pretty much exactly what i was looking for. she digs it and doesn't mind the fact it is black.

semlin... take that damn plastic spoke ring and reflector off your kid's bike... sheesh..

those wheels came off my old bike along with everything but the frames and fork. i left the reflectors on since he is still a kid, but he has already busted one off somehow.

. . .

My 9 yo daughter rides a 20" Gary Fisher MTB. The bike's a piece of crap, but that tiny girl surprises me with some of the trails she drives it over. And she loves riding it.
