Well I'm not finished, but who ever really is.

I shaved about 1/4" off of my passenger side body puck, leveled out the body to the frame, all is left is the cruiser lean. I wired in a manual glow switch, and mounted it where the rear locker switch would be. The initial start up only produced one coolant leak, which was a under tightened hose clamp. The first bump in the road was fitting the rear drive shaft, the front was a perfect fit. The rear companion flange out of the Hz uses 11m studs, and the 79 drive shaft was a foot to long. I drilled out my drive shaft holes (stock for 10mm) the fit the 11m stud, but the stud spacing out of the hz is larger. So I swaped rear companion flanges, from my A343 (stock tranny) onto the R151. In doing so I was able to swap speedo gears as well.

Got the hood on, and lined up then Drove her outside! So most of the swap is done, just a bit of tiding up the engine compartment.

The first test drive went fairly well, except for 5th gear. I'm having troubles getting into 5th, all the others are fine. It feels like it engages when you shift, but as soon as you release the clutch, you can feel a small pop followed by grinding of the gears. I tried many diferent senarios to get it to work, and I only had success when I shifted from 3rd into 5th, at mid rpm? I don't know much about trannys, but I assume this probably has no easy fix. The tranny was over filled, when I took out the side filler plug oil came pouring out. About 1 litre drained out before it stopped, could there be a reason for this? I couldn't find out fill levels for this tranny in the online manuals, so I figured level with the bottom of the filler hole or a little less. Any thoughs on this?

After all said and done, I'm stoked with the truck:D

Wow that's quite the jazzy music on the video, looks like they kept the original enine (gasser)?

I've been driving around for a couple weeks now, a noticed how much better fuel economy I'm getting. With the 2LTE I would get around 400kms to a tank (90Ltr.), as it stands now I'm at 400 kms with a half of a tank left, though the top half is bigger. I wonder If someone prior to me owning the 2LTE had increased the fuel?

It looks like the Tranny R151F could use a rebuild, 5th is hard to get into ( pops out and grinds), even after some fresh oil. The other day I noticed my oil pressure drop off, to about 1/4 to a 1/3 pressure on the stock gauge. I am going to install a mech gauge soon, but in the mean time I'm thinking of checking the relief valves to see if one is stuck open?

Another thing with the Prado's 4.9 diff gears and 33's first gear is looow, I shift into second at about 5 km hr. I wouldn't even use it if the there wasn't a shudder starting off in 2nd. And on the other end cruising in 5th keeps me at 80-90 kms tops, after that the engine sound like it is really moving, and loud with only a spark arrester and a foot of exaust pipe after leaving the wheel well.:hillbilly:

Thanks Wayne.

I'm planning on building a front/rear bumper in the near future, also saw some cool awning ideas in the camping section.

WOW. It is done looks AWESOME!

Concerning your trans problem, the h55F has two know problems, your 5fth gear problem many will say that the problem comes from your syncros but it doesn't! it's a plastic piece is supposed to be replaced under your shiftstick, very easy to do:
here are the parts numbers: 33505-60010 or 33548-60020
When you will take the shift stick off you may not find the worned out piece as it may have fallen in the gearbox...no worry, the gears must have eaten it easily :) and no trace to be found in the oil as it's plastic :)
the overflowing oil problem when you checked the levels is also very common, you can fit a bypass kit between transfer and gearbox...
very nice truck btw :) love it
what coils did you put in front to level the nose?

Thanks Gottoy, for the heads up.

I should of answered myself on my last post. For starts I running a R151F, which I had the shifter out to rotate it toward myself, being the tranny was out of Lhd and now is in a Rhd. That plastic piece was still there, and from what I could tell, in good shape.

As for the 5th gear problem I 've found by bringing the revs up to match or higher, 5th engages, I'm assuming this is syncro related. On that note 3rd is a little worn, and doesn't like a fast hard shift. The tranny needs some work, but in the mean time:steer:.
I went with OME heavys in the front, they seem to be fine, but might me a little soft with a bumper and winch.

Thanks.
Joel.

shoot me your addy, i am in victoria and heading for Sheldons this Sat or Sun and would love to see this unit first hand.
cheers

so i finally met up and took this unit for a test drive. what can i say? i was completely impressed. it rode nice, handled good, quiet, comfortable and a clean install. congrats on a job well done.

sad to say, after driving this truck first hand it put a bug in my ear. i picked up the HZJ79 mine truck to deliver to Bruce in Calgary. Bruce then, the evil man that he is, in return found me a LJ78 with a dead engine just outside of Sundre AB for cheap. I had an empty float to haul back home anyway so why not haul something? I had a bush pig with a turbo'd intercooled 1PZ /R141 that had a body that was getting rougher (and i was bored with the ride)... so money dropped and this test drive drove the stake home.

congrats again on a job well done (and the seed your sowed in my mind)

cheers

Was able to scrape together some time this morn, and dry fit the Hz. I had noticed that the stock front drive shafts of both the lj78 and the hzj79 were the same length, and after taking a few measurments it looked like tranny mounts might not need to be moved :D. After cutting the motor mounts out of the lj and the 79, the Hz slid right into place. I Used the stock placed tranny mount, and then tacked in place the motor mounts ( I'll be able to use both stock drive shafts ). So far it looks like the fan will need some attention, the 18" hz fan just hits the front crossmember, and the smaller 2LT fan clears by about 3/4". Both leave no room for a shroud, I'll have to see what it looks like when the panels are on, thinking if I bring the fan foward about 3" it should be past the crossmember.

Anyone know what the weight difference between the HZ and the 2LTE is? I cross referenced a Bundera (2LTE) and a hzj70, and came to 140kg, I know the suspension is different etc.

Joel.

question of the day

your original trans was an auto right? we looked at it briefly yesterday - on waynes donor truck
(a PZ70) front driveshaft is shorter than the LJ78 but I think I remembered hearing that different LC trannys have different lengths - Waynes trans is a 4 speed

Ill take a tape measure from bellhousing to transfer case DS flanges on the auto, a 5 speed, and a 4 speed today...

I tried to lobby wayne to leave crossmember in place and just add body mounts in proper location.... and use twin electric pusher fans in front of rad (with no shroud).... could possibly do a small (LJ) fan AND a pusher fan

but wayne being wayne zip disked the front off (he has a spare section to weld in)

hope to have that and motor mounts done today and slide the PZ in before dinner
