Have you tried Vintage Air?

x2 on vintage air. I've got a SBC in mine with vintage air. Not perfect....but it blows cold. There's some other retro A/C units that could probably work as well.

I bought the kit for an fj40.....it took some....er....adjustments to make it fit.

The OEM nippondenso A/C systems for your vintage FJ55 arent too hard to find, and work really well when you have a new modern compressor(like a sanden 508) and condensor(try acsource.com)... just another option...

You can get alot of the parts that vintage air sells from a company called Parr Automotive. The vintage air rep actually told me thats where they get some of there stuff and its actually cheaper than vintage air.

whatever you decide, condensor choice is important, b/c there is limited room in the grille, and you need to maximize size to get best performance. I have a vintage air condensor(I didnt end up using it), and one from acsource.com and the one from acsource.com is hands down a better design and quality. worth the extra money.

If you go OEM all you really need is the evaporator, everything else can be sourced easily other than OEM. On my '55 we have the OEM evaporator and condensor only and the compressor and hoses are a little different. It cools well but since the air is only discharged at the middle it's not as good as the newer vehicles.
