I need to replace a wheel stud on my front axle. Depending on where I read I'm seeing I need a 54mm or a 55mm socket. I hate to order the wrong size...... so what do the experts here say?

Thanks,
Dave

With OEM nuts it's 54 mm, but some aftermarket nuts are slightly larger. A 55 mm socket will work perfectly well on a 54 mm nut. Just make sure the socket fits in the hub. I have a 55 mm socket which just fits, but with very little gap.

What I have is a 2 1/8 socket for the 54 mm hub nuts. It is slighter larger than a true 54 mm, so it works great. Also, it is for a 3/4 inch drive so I keep a 1/2 to 3/4 inch drive adapter with it. When I bought this, 54 mm sockets were not available locally but the 2 1/8 were. Recently, I noticed that Northern Tool has sockets of this size on the shelf which should be a cheap'ish option.

Be sure to order a 54mm hub tool, not an actual socket (one is cheap, the other would be very expensive)

My 54 hub socket was off amazon. inexpensive, But it was a c-hair too small. Had to spend 20 minutes with a file to get it to fit. Just be prepared if you end up gonig with an amazon one.
lol, ordered one from Amazon this morning

If it is like this
My experience with one of these was it will be in the recycle bin sooner or later. It is just formed sheet metal and when you encounter a very tight nut, it will just bend and spin around the nut. That led me to purchasing a real socket. The one I got is similar to this (an impact socket is over kill and the wall thickness might lead to a fitment issue)
Good luck

2 1/8" can be found used and are cheaper. I actually have a real heavy wall socket which has been doing the job for 25 years. If you are not in the industry just borrow the damn thing (along w three pin rear axle tool etc).

Just buy the correct tool once.

Hello,

Paraphrasing Curtis LeMay, do it right the first time. In that way, you do not have to go back and do it again.
