This is a dual post.

First the picture is of the rear window switch from my 78 55,,,, as you can see the solder connection has separated. I tried two different soldering irons, a soldering gun and even heating up an old tymey copper soldering dohicky with my mapp gas torch and touching the solder on the wire and nothing has caused the solder to melt or get shiny... I really do not want to apply direct flame to any parts.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to ramp up the soldering iron and solder something like this?

I am considering drilling out the post on the switch, tapping it, removing the solder off the wire and installing a ring connector and a small screw with locktite..

Also, I dismantled the rear window last summer to lower the window to open the tailgate. I took the gear/arm/motor plate out of the inside of the tailgate...(and just now got the new gear).. but have forgotten how it all goes back together. even so, I do not want to put the window back without the switch working or at the minimum installed... I did not dismantle that plate, but I have a spring and some extra bolts....

So I need a schematic or picture or a talk thru on how it goes. Thanks!

first picture was too big...???

so here is one, notice the center wire is disconnected from the base.

searched your name Pablocruise and keyword torsion bar

Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.

what am I doing wrong?

i had a dash switch where it had seperated from the solder also and, like you, had no luck fixing it. still have it sitting around waiting for another try

dang if the "55-guru" is stumped.. I should hang it up.....

I might stop by an electrical motor place on my way to Athens tomorrow and trade them some Filly Cheesesteaks for some advice..

but have forgotten how it all goes back together.!

OK, I've done about a dozen tailgate window repairs for myself and others, and I'm almost an expert in this area. However, explaining how it goes together, in print, is beyond me. The arms go in not-symmetrical. Trial and error worked for me the first time or two. Beware, you can lose a finger doing this. I would just replace that rear switch with one out of my spare parts pile.

I have posted up scans from the FSM a few times about the tail gate mechanicals and electrical, recently I posted them in a thread about the torsion bar - those scans should help.

I've got nothing on soldering...

There is a thread titled "back window", last touched on 2-10 in this section.

It has some good links in it...

This thread: https://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-iron-...6-rear-window-article-available-gary-s-2.html

Is probably the best one to start with, not sure there is much to add beyond the content in there. It has my scans of FSM for electrical and mechanical, and articles and schematics by Gary S.

Enjoy, and good luck.
