How do you tell if your landcruiser has the cold climate package?

Toyota # 28100-66060 is the cold weather starter (2.0kW) and easier to find than the 28100-66050 2.2kW starter (only came on 93 models). There is a 1.4kW starter but IIRC it didn't usually come on trucks sold in the US (the parts gurus will know). Best to buy a Toyota-Denso starter, no name auto-parts store starters don't last.

Can you take it in to a battery shop and have it rebuilt.

Cost me about $160 to have it done at the shop plus they look over the whole electrical system.

Depends on what is wrong with it. The two sets of replaceable contacts and bit are less than $50 to do yourself. John

What exactly is the cold weather package?

It refers to a starter part option; the cold weather option starter is 2.0kW, the other is 1.4kW.

Only factory cold WX option I am aware of was the starter

Many threads here on aftermarket options:

Block heater
New leather seats and seat heaters
Side view mirror heater elements
Viper alarm with remote starter
Set of dedicated snow tires

Typically the starter motor itself should last the life of 2 trucks. What goes bad is usually the solenoid parts/brushes/plunger etc and/or the drive gear.

I feel like I am about to find out how to rebuild my starter. In the last couple weeks, my truck hasnt started-- no click, but all lights on. I've rocked the truck a little, and it starts right up. (I used to do this with my VW.) Today, nothing worked and no start, no nothing; lights are on though and don't dim when key is turned.

Anyway to test if this is my starter (or ignition switch) without tearing into it? Just asking. I've heard about smacking it while driver has key in ON position? I should probably just rebuild it by now anyway as I'm close to 190k. But any insights would be great.

The brushes on the starters are really a maintenance item. Replace them and your good for another 100k miles.

FWIW the cold weather package on my HDJ81 included the following:

- fuel heater
- heated front seats
- retractable radiator winter front

As far as I know all HDJ81's have the 4.5kw 24v starter.

Replace your contacts and the plunger. That should get you back on the road. It's about a 20 min job after you have the starter out. There are many threads on it just pick one and enjoy nice clean starts.

To get right contacts n plunger to replace, copy number on your starters sticker n call a Toyota source.

Done! Was really easy to do. If this advertising creative director can do it, anyone can (thanks to this forum.)
