How do you keep your garage organized? (1 Viewer)

Pure, utter chaos. There is no rhyme or reason to where tools, parts, bolts, etc goes, yet I know where everything is.

Drives my wife crazy. I tell her she needs to help organize, then gives up....

The best way she HAS taught me to organize, is to get rid of all the crap you don't use or keep. Yeah, those bins of obscure MR2 parts I've been holding for a decade have no use when I haven't had an mr2 for 4 years.....

I feel your pain. Recently moved, and had to clean out and/or pack my shop. Filled a good part of a dumpster with used motorcycle parts dating back to the 70's and 80's, parts for other vehicles I haven't owned in ages, even a bunch of take-off or replaced parts from my 40, but just didn't have time to see who might have needed them and wait for them to come pick them up. :(

Schaller bins and a label maker have changed my life. While not perfect, it's a hell of a lot better than drawers of loose crap, or tons of non-standardized hardware cases floating around. All of the drawers in my welding table workbench have these in varying sizes.

Second best organization tool for me has been these hanging cabinets I got from Harbor Freight. They're hung with unistrut and can hold a bunch of weight. The shelves above are awesome too:

Third best has been this Swag Offroad Clutter Catcher, but knowing what I know now, I'd have built my own rack to store grinders and other workbench tools, but this works pretty well:

By far the best thing I have done is to restrict my horizontal space. I used to have more workbenches, but horizontal workbenches always collect crap. Having only a 5'x3' welding table and a 6'x4' wooden workbench has been a great way to force myself to put stuff away, or get rid of it, instead of letting stuff build up.

Organization is always a struggle!

Akrobins are the bomb, really strong, stackable and from time to time you can find them on CL for cheap

Also notice the storage for spray cans, very useful (my basement wall had a 45deggre bottom, so it work great..

I also made this to store bigger stuff and tools, 4 gallOn buckets on a 10deggre angled shelf, nothing falls off

Are those panels from something? Or were you just practicing with your holesaw and dimple die?

This is a very temporary set up but I was just tired of this things getting in my way..

Note: very flemsy POS stands even if they sell them as ''heavy duty''

Four of this little cheap hooks..

Very secure and very simple to hang..

I am looking at french cleats right now for a lot of things in my home. My garage/shop/basement is low on the list right now.

I have a bunch of these and they are great for hardware. Ask a bigger mechanic shop or manufacturing facility who stalks and sells them their bolts and fasners. The local to me sales rep replaces all their old bins when he gets new contracts so their brand is displayed properly. He then cleans them up and sells them and donates the money to his church.

$25 per cabinet with four drawers used.

I like those metal ones. I’ll have to see if I can find a local rep doing anything similar.

I picked these up at an auction awhile back:

Unfortunately, the cases are plastic and hardboard, the bins are plastic, and the boxes on the left are just cardboard. Still, it works well enough. My local hardware store also uses MidWest Fasteners, so I can restock through them. It saves those runs to the store for a few of these or a few of those - or when you need one or two more of something.

Neither of my garages are ever totally organized.

The one attached to the house and the separate garage are constantly in a state of flux.

The best way I have found to keep things straight is once you have everything organized is to lock the doors and never go back in again.
