I made a hiking staff (and a fighting staff, a la Morgan from TWD, perhaps) out of a 1-3/8 in. x 60 in. hardwood round dowel that I ordered online from Home Depot. They didn't specify the type of wood; all I know is it came from Vietnam.

I went back and forth between the 1-2/4 in. and the 1-3/8 in. diameter dowel. I think the 1-2/4 in. would have been fine, but I ended up going with 1-3/8 in. since it was already pre-cut to the length I wanted.

Last night I rounded off the edge on each end, sanded the whole thing extra smooth with 320 sandpaper, and then sealed the grain and small gaps on the bottom end with glue. This morning I applied several light coats of Minwax Semi-Gloss Helmsman Indoor/Outdoor Spar Urethane Aerosol Spray. (If you can't tell, that's a homemade spray stand too.)

Suggestions for some extras you might want to add;
Wrap paracord around the top to provide a more secure hand grip and some emergency cordage.
A metal or rubber tip to keep the end from wearing out.
Drill out the top to make a small storage compartment for a ferro rod.
Use a wood burner to make some ruler marks down one side.

Those are all good suggestions. I have another staff that I made when the boys were in Boy Scouts years ago. I put a rubber tip on the bottom, and drilled a hole near the top and tied leather boot lace through it as a wrist strap. Right now I'm thinking of leaving this one "plain."

Rediscovering the Scout Staff

Good ideas in there.

Nice job!

Whenever I think of these things, I think of Robin Hood and Friar Tuck and their epic duel on the log!
