hj60 gears

Just order gears for fj60/2, as they are the same. You wont need the bolt kit.

Thanks for all your help. I ordered a set of gears and install kits from Randy's today. I think the 4.88 is going to be right, but if its too steep it will give me an excuse to size up the tires :)

I will post back here on how it works out.

Well things arent going so well. I found a transmission shop that was recommended by several people I trust. They asked to see the parts to look over the job before getting started, which gave them. Then I brought it in for what was supposed to be a 2 day job there.

I just got a call today from them saying that they had to tear it down far more than expected and have had to order new gaskets for a lot of things they didnt think they would have to change. They are saying this is likely a $1500 USD job...

Can I get some comps on this from any of you out there? How many hours should this take?

zander, are we still talking about regearing diffs or are we talking about rebuilding the tranny? Have you asked Mudrak how much to rebuild the H55f? You are local to him.

If you are talking about regearing the diffs, a guy in the PMC has been doing it for club members for $150 per. Can't remember his name, both his dad and he are in the club.

Dave

Oh, I get it, $1500 is for dropping off the entire running HJ60 at their shop and they do all the work from taking off the wheels all the way to actually regearing the diffs! Yep, they pretty much have to do a knuckle job to do the front correctly, and the rear they have to pull the axles and cover plate, etc.

To save money, drop the third members yourself at home and bring it them to the shop.

Dave

I spoke with Mudrak and he didnt seem all that excited about the job, and said he would would do it for time and materials, and it would at least 5 hrs each front and rear ~$1100. And he is an hour away. This place quoted the same thing, so originally this didnt seem like such a bad deal, but now its going a bit sideways from what I was expecting after reading about so many people swapping gears here. In retrospect, I should have pulled it apart myself.

That sounds rich. I know it's not comparing apples with apples, but my local gear mechanics quoted me $1100Aud to install 2 Lock Rights and replace the ring and pinions (Me supplying the Lock Rights and R&P's). That's around $900Usd. I got them to install the a lock right in the rear, but haven't decided whether to change the R&P's, go Turbo, or leave it alone!

you have to take into consideration the location of the different mechs. the cost of living is HIGH in California so mechs charge more.
Here in Calgary shops get paid good money, the shop space to rent is just stupid and add to that the city taxes, business, tax, amvic tax, "you want to breath the air" tax and it starts to make sense.
go 1 1/2 away from Calgary and the cost drop big time.
cheers

Well I just got the HJ60 out of its expensive gear transplant from the shop. I am very happy with it, there is no noticable extra gear noise at all and the powerband is much better.

With the 4.11s the speedo was 15% fast. Its now about 4% slow (checking the speed on my GPS). Does much better on the grade coming up to the Golden Gate Bridge and I assume will do better on slow crawling trails. Overall a good upgrade... but more than I expected to pay for it.

Posting my factory 4.11 gears and assciated gear now in the classified section.

How you feel your TLC with 33" and 4.88 .. on the high way .. ?

In my case from 2 years, I had a 33" with 4.56 plus H55F in my HJ-60 and I thought that convination is pretty good for overal off road .. but 4.88 is to much on the road, you can't go over 100 km/h. ( 60miles )

Sorry you are not in Southern Cal, I would have done the job for less than $1100.00, that seems pretty expensive to me :frown:

Are you running 2H motor? Do you have FF rear or SF?

Thanks,

Michael

It has BFG 33" an A440 auto tranny in it which I think makes the difference. It cruises well on the highway at 70 MPH at 2300 rpms or so and can go plety faster. Will report back with more data.

Thanks for the heads up... in retrospect I should have driven it to a landcruiser specialist. Mudrak is an hour away and I should a gone there.

Its a 2H, FF front and SF rear with Auburn LSD.

congrates on the performance gain, i would have thought the 4.88s would have been too low but with the auto it sounds like a nice upgrade...

I still have 4.88's in mine from the days when I had a 2H engine. With 35" BFG's now it feels really low geared, but I've checked the speedometer against a police radar and it is almost dead on. Even with the 2H, I could hit 110 kmh.

at how much RPM.. ?

At about 2800 rpm. It was on the flat areas only :)

Dave

not too bad

2500 Is comfortable rpm range to my 2H engine, and if I can get 100 km/h at this rpm, I thought are the best gearing.
